TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 24

With the regular season coming to a close, most of the playoff picture is starting to fall into place. Seeding on the other hand is still completely up in the air. The TWC NHL Power Rankings may be able to provide some clarity in Week 24 as to where certain teams should end up.

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

Since the regular season is almost complete, we extended Week 24 to cover the last eight days’ worth of games – especially with last night being a busy one in terms of NHL schedule.

The Dallas Stars took advantage of that going 3-0-0 and extending their win streak to seven games. This swapped them into first place with the Colorado Avalanche, who went 1-2-1, the first-place team from last week. Interestingly enough, these are the two teams vying for the Central Division title, since the Winnipeg Jets have fallen slightly off course. The edge goes to the Stars right now with seven games left, as they are riding the hot streak of many players.

One of the biggest winners this past week was the Edmonton Oilers, who went 3-0-1 to jump up four spots. It could have been 4-0-0 had it not been for a controversial pair of no-goal calls in last night’s game against the St. Louis Blues. That being said, the team now sits five points behind the Vancouver Canucks with a game in hand to capture the Pacific Division crown. The Cancuks went just 1-2-0 last week, despite being the first Canadian team to clinch a postseason berth, and could be in jeopardy of losing the number one seed should they continue that way. There is a date on the calendar circled for both teams.

Moving to the Eastern Conference, and down our list, we find the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers. Interestingly enough, the Carolina Hurricanes who sit second on our list also are second behind the Rangers. The Canes underlying numbers are better, but that won’t win the division for them. Another key race to watch down the stretch.

The Atlantic Division is one of the more fascinating ones. On our rankings, we have four straight teams from the Atlantic on our list from 8-11: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and Boston Bruins. It’s ironically almost the complete opposite of how they are ranked in the standings. The teams are separated by a small margin on our rankings but are further apart in real life. Boston and Florida are fighting for number one, and Toronto and Tampa are battling to not be in the wild card. Who will get who?

Finally, the season is almost over for several teams who had tough years. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators went a combined 6-0-1 last week, which is good for four spots each on our list, but bad in terms of draft positioning.
