TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 10

After an exciting week of NHL hockey, the TWC NHL Power Rankings are back with an updated list. This week didn’t see many teams make up significant ground, but many teams inched up the ranking. On the other hand, a few teams lost significant ground.

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

At the top of the list, the Pacific Division continues to hold down the top two positions, with the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights leading the way. The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers round out a top four that is starting to look tough to break into for the rest of the league.

Rounding out the top five, the Toronto Maple Leafs moved up one spot, knocking the Florida Panther out of the top group after collecting six of a possible eight points on the week. These small improvements were a pattern this week, with six different teams moving up one spot. Overall, ten teams gained places while only five lost ground.

This means those who lost ground had to lose on average more places. The big losers of the week were in the Atlantic Division, with both the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings dropping six places. Their combined win-loss record was 1–7–0.

That record, combined with each team’s poor underlying possessions and chance numbers, led to their tough performance in this week’s ranking.

On a more positive note, the Minnesota Wild climbed four positions. That brings their total ranking change to plus-nine since changing coaches in late November. Interestingly, the Wild’s underlying metrics are essentially the same as they were under Dean Evason.

The only big change in the numbers is in team save percentage. Prior to the coaching change, the Wild had an 87.6% team save percentage. Since the change, they have a league-leading 94.7% save percentage. It will be interesting to see how long that can be sustained.

Another team which managed to make up some ground is the Nashville Predators. The Preds won all three of their games and moved up three places as a result. Star goaltender Juuse Saros had an uncharacteristically human start to the season but has been rounding into form of late, much to his team’s benefit.

The Predators are average in most of the metrics considered by the rankings model, but in a league like the NHL, an average team with a strong goaltender can go far. The Preds will be an interesting team to watch as the playoff battle heats up later in the year.

Check back next week to see how your team is doing!
