TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 17

The TWC NHL Power Rankings are back after a brief hiatus for the 2024 NHL All-Star festivities. The handful of games before and after the All-Star game were combined, and most teams netted out to about a week’s worth of games. Nevertheless, teams got much-needed rest heading into the final stretch.

Read on to see who made the most of the break and came back swinging versus who struggled to take advantage.

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

Once again, the Florida Panthers sit at the top of the rankings. With a winning record and strong underlying metrics, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them in the top spot more often than not until the end of the season.

Just below them, the Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars are climbing the standings. The top of the list is very close below the Panthers, with just over two points in TWC’s power score separating the next three teams.

But perhaps more interesting than the rising teams are the falling Edmonton Oilers. Their nearly record-setting win streak has been snapped, and they have struggled in their past few games, even being shut out by their divisional rival Los Angeles Kings.

The Oilers have shown they have what it takes and are a true contender, but this slide costs them in the power rankings nonetheless. It will be interesting to see how long this skid lasts, especially after the impressive sixteen-game win streak that recently ended.

Beyond Edmonton, the biggest fallers of the week were the Washington Capitals. Despite a big win against the contending Boston Bruins, they dropped two games in regulation and another in extra time.

The Caps have struggled throughout the season, and their poor underlying possession and chance numbers indicate they’re not likely to turn things around soon. It may be time to start looking to the future in Washington.

On the other end of the spectrum, six teams jumped two spots each, all tied for the biggest jump. The most surprising of the group would be the Calgary Flames. Coming back from the All-Star break without star centre Elias Lindholm, few would have predicted the win streak that’s followed.

With four wins in a row and three since the last power rankings, the underdog Flames are playing some of their best hockey of the year. Whether or not they can keep up this level of play could dictate the fate of the team’s many pending free agents.

Check back in next week to see how they and the other 31 teams fare in the next seven days.
