TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 15

With another week complete in the NHL, the Power Rankings are due for another update. This was a week of relative stability, with most of the teams moving, but only a few moving significantly up or down the rankings.

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

Two new teams appeared (or re-appeared) in the top five this week. The Boston Bruins returned to the top group after a week off, and the Edmonton Oilers climbed their way in as well. With a record setting win streak under their belt, the only question is why the Oilers aren’t higher.

Digging into the underlying metrics shows the Oilers are a strong team in both possession and scoring chances. The only statistical category that’s held them back is save percentage. As their team save percentage continues to improve, expect them to keep climbing even higher up the ranks.

Another team of interest this week is the Colorado Avalanche. The perennial contenders dipped four places, one of the biggest moves of the week, despite two wins on the week.

Like the Oilers, the Avs are a strong team in terms of underlying numbers. Their drop in positions is less to do with their own play than it is the extremely strong play of some of their competitors in the top portion of the rankings. They are a strong contender to climb right back up the list in the coming weeks.

Towards the middle of the standings, the New Jersey Devils also saw a four-place fall this week. They lost three games on the week, and haven’t looked like the same high-flying juggernaut we saw last season.

They’re a strong possession team, but give up nearly as many high-danger opportunities as they have themselves. Combined with below-average goaltending, the model is skeptical of the Devils.

To end on a high-note, the Tampa Bay Lightning clawed their way up a few places this week. The dynastic Lightning are finally showing signs the championship window may be closing. But, with Nikita Kucherov lighting the lamp as he usually does, they just can’t sink too far.

Make sure to check back in for next week’s edition to see which direction your team is going!
