TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 18

The second half of the season is well underway in the NHL, and the TWC NHL Power Rankings is starting to really divide the contenders and pretenders. With just a few weeks left before the NHL Trade Deadline, see which teams are prime to stay on top or potentially fall out of the picture.

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

The Florida Panthers continue to reign supreme in our rankings for their sixth straight week. The Panthers are simply one of the best teams in the NHL and stand above the rest in the Eastern Conference. It’s going to be hard to dethrone the Cats.

The Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks swapped places last week after going 2–0–1 and 2–1–0 respectively. The one single regulation loss seems to be the difference here, as their TWCScore is extremely close. Both are top-three teams that are just jostling for position.

Moving around the top 10, the Boston Bruins had a tough week going 0–1–2 which caused them to drop two spots to eighth on our list. As a result, the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets took advantage of this going 3–0–0 and 2–0–0 respectively to move up to sixth and seventh on the list.

Rounding out the top 10, the Toronto Maple Leafs rode a perfect 3–0–0 week to take the tenth position on the list. The team is starting to get some momentum, thanks to Auston Matthews’ insane goal-scoring, and are back in the third wild-card position in the Atlantic as a result.

The biggest mover this week was the Minnesota Wild who went 2–0–1 to push their record to 7–2–1 in their last ten. Miraculously, the Wild are now just four points back of the final wild-card spot in a wild Western Conference. The season is nowhere near dead for the Wild.

It is looking dead for the biggest loser this week: the Calgary Flames. After winning four in a row, they lost three in a row in regulation. Adding in all of the trade chatter, it’s bound to be a turbulent few weeks in Calgary.
