TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 13

It’s a new year, which means there are new teams across our TWC NHL Power Rankings this week. Some teams are already hitting their New Year’s resolutions, while others are still hungover a week later.

Take a look at where your team fell in the first full week of action in 2024!

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

Have any suggestions for the TWC Power Rankings for next season? Leave us a comment and let us know. Without further ado, this week’s power rankings are below!

The new year has brought two new top teams into the top two spots in our rankings.

Starting at the top, the Florida Panthers take the top spot this week after going 3–0–0 and extending their win streak to seven games. After starting the season somewhat lacklustrely, the Panthers have surged to within striking distance of the top spot in the Atlantic Division. Not just that far, as they are also just a few points away from being the best team in the NHL.

Their key players have returned from injuries, and their underlying numbers are nothing to scoff at, making for an all-around well-deserved number one position.

Hot on their heels is the best team in the NHL at the time of writing: the Winnipeg Jets. Of course, no one saw that comment coming to start the year as most assumed the worst. But even without the likes of Kyle Connor the Jets are surging. The main reason for this is their league-leading save percentage thanks to Connor Hellebuyck and Laurent Broissoit. The Jets are going to be a hard test come the postseason and represent another solid shot at the Stanley Cup returning to Canada.

Moving down our list, the number one team last week—the Los Angeles Kings—took a bit of a stumble after a 0–2–1 outing. With the Edmonton Oilers surging behind them, the third place in the Pacific Division doesn’t seem like such a lock anymore for the team.

The Dallas Stars, who were second last week, also posted a 0–2–1 record leading to a similar drop in our rankings to sixth place. Along with the Kings, it’s been an off week for a couple of good teams, but with other teams surging around them, it could be costly in the long run.

The Carolina Hurricanes, who are always adored in our model backed by their analytical outcomes, used a 2–0–1 week to catapult up three spots into seventh place. In a deep Metropolitan Division, the Hurricanes need more weeks like this to keep pace with the rest of the teams.

Other key teams to note from Week 13 are the Vegas Golden Knights’ continued cool-down. They dropped four spots after a 1–2–0 week and are tied for the most games played in the Pacific. They are still in an excellent position but have gone 3–7–0 in their last ten games which doesn’t help their case.

The Seattle Kraken continue to win, with their sixth win in a row coming this week, making things interesting in the Pacific in the process. They are the biggest gainers this week moving up five spots.

On the flip side, the Arizona Coyotes went 0–3–0 and suffered a five-spot drop in our model. Once in a comfortable wild-card spot in the West, the Coyotes now sit a point back but have two teams ahead of them in the standings. They can’t afford another week like that.
