TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 16

With the NHL heading into the 2024 All-Star break, there were some teams that didn’t want their hot streaks to stop while other teams desperately needed a break to stop the bleeding. With the playoff race heating up, the All-Star break with transition teams into playing with more desperation and fighting for every point.

With that all said, the last week of hockey has produced some rare big movers in Week 16 of the TWC NHL Power Rankings, let’s check it out!

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

The Florida Panthers have retained their number one overall ranking after a perfect 4–0–0 week. The team may still be trailing the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division, but their underlying numbers are driving their spot in our rankings. The team is first in SCF%, second in CF%, xGF%, HDCF%, and top six in SV%. Safe to say they are well-rounded and will continue to be near the top of our list for weeks to come.

In second place this week are the surging Edmonton Oilers, who have extended their winning streak to 16 games. Within striking range of the all-time win streak in NHL history, the Oilers are the story of the season. What is different this season is that they are more than just a two-horse team. They sit first in xGF% and HDCF% while posting top-five numbers across the other categories measured in our model. What is even more impressive is after all of the questions to start the year, they are extremely close to a top-ten SV%. I wouldn’t want to be the team facing the Oilers in the first round.

To round out the top five, the Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, and Dallas Stars all moved up or down a single spot. The Carolina Hurricanes almost cracked the top five after a 3–0–0 week, but will have to wait until after the All-Star break to see if they can jump back in.

The team of note from last week was the Winnipeg Jets who went 0–2–1 including two losses to the Toronto Maple Leafs. This showing dropped them six spots on our list, but it is more temporary. The Jets had been on an absolute tear and so a bit of regression is expected. That being said, they are still leading the Central Division in terms of point percentage and will surely be bouncing back soon.

The two teams that had strong showings this week were the Tampa Bay Lightning and St. Louis Blues who won three and four games respectively. The Lightning used their week to jump back into the top three in the Atlantic Division, while the Blues jumped all the way up into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Some much-needed weeks for both teams.
