TWC NHL Power Rankings 2023–24: Week 14

With 2024 now well underway, there are new trends and teams emerging in the TWC NHL Power Rankings. This week helped solidify or reverse some of the new trends to start the year. Read on to see how your team is doing!

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

The very top of the standing remain the same as last week. With a rejuvenated Matthew Tkachuk having returned to form, the Panthers are firing on all cylinders, picking up two wins and a loss this week, good enough to maintain top spot.

Winnipeg also continued their tear. Between the elite goaltending of Connor Hellebuyck and their strong depth, the Jets seem to be just about unstoppable.

Rounding out the top five both the Avalanche and Canucks leapt up five spots this week, winning all three and four of their games, respectively.

On the other hand, some teams have really struggled since the calendar flipped. The Kings, after holding down a top three spot in this rankings almost all year, have fallen all the way to 10th place. They are the last team in the NHL to not have a win in 2024.

Although the underlying numbers are still strong for L.A., a regression to the mean from their earlier dominance is somewhat expected. No doubt, they will return to their winning ways before playoffs roll around.

Further down the list, the Calgary Flames are another of the week’s big winners. With three wins and no losses, the Flames jumped up four positions on the list. Perhaps extra motivated as they are enjoying the annual dads and mentors trips, the Flames look more motivated than ever before, and it’s translating to wins. It helps to have Jacob Markstrom in Vezina-calibre form, too.
