TWC NHL Power Rankings 2022–23: Week 15

After what seemed like a few weeks of stability, the TWC NHL Power Rankings were back in full fluctuation this week. A number of teams significantly improved or worsened their rankings this week, so it’s all about the jumps. Was your team one of them?

TWC Power Rankings explained

If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.

Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week to week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.

We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.

Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

Have any suggestions for the TWC Power Rankings for next season? Leave us a comment and let us know. Without further ado, this week’s power rankings are below!

Week 15 Highlights

As the season gets closer to the trade deadline, we know pretty much who the sellers, buyers, and those middle of the pack teams are. Therefore, this week we are just going to talk about some of the biggest movers who have catapulted themselves, one way or another, into one of those categories.

First off, the Edmonton Oilers who have now won six consecutive games and find themselves within striking distance of first in the Pacific Division. They jumped up seven spots this week into the seventh overall position. Connor McDavid is dominating the rest of the NHL, and they are simply outscoring teams enough across their roster to win games. Their underlying numbers sit in the upper half of the league, with their best coming in the HDCF% category, but surely this team is finally where most thought they would be at this point.

The next two teams on our list find themselves side by side at eleventh and twelfth on our list, but are headed in opposite directions. The Vegas Golden Knights went 1–3–0 last week to drop four spots, while the Florida Panthers went 3–0–1 to gain four spots.

Poetic in a way.

The Golden Knights, who once had a stranglehold on the Pacific Division, temporarily lost that spot this week to the Seattle Kraken. After suffering a regulation loss at the hands of the Arizona Coyotes, the team could once again forfeit that spot to the Kraken this week. It’s not always golden in Vegas.

The Florida Panthers meanwhile have finally started to find their stride. The team now sits just three points back of a wild card position, although are behind two in the games played category. It’s slowly starting to come together, but boy has it taken a while.

The hottest team on our list this week was the Colorado Avalanche, who gained eight spots up to 15th and are riding a five-game win streak. It’s hard to see the Avalanche staying out of the playoff picture this year, but with so many injuries it started to seem that way. They were able to win even more games shorthanded last week, and are looking to get back to somewhat of a full strength down the stretch to make the Western Conference playoff picture look even tighter.

Speaking of which, the Calgary Flames lost two games in regulation last week against teams in that race in the West and dropped five spots on our list. They may have handled Tampa Bay on Saturday, but the rest of the teams around them are setting the pace. Maybe the Johnny Gaudreau return game will finally set them on the right path.

Two other teams dropped five spots last week: the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders. The Senators may think they are still in the playoff race, while the Islanders absolutely just fell out of it. Lots of work to be done.

Finally, the Chicago Blackhawks finally crawled out of the basement this week by going 3–1–0. Congratulations, you can’t even tank right!
