Martin Pospisil’s road to the NHL hasn’t been linear, to say the least. He’s dealt with his fair share of setbacks, including his most recent concussion.
So, what’s next for Pospisil?
His career thus far
Pospisil was drafted 105th overall in 2018 by the Flames. After wrapping up his tenure with the Sioux City Musketeers, he set out on his journey to make the show.
He posted decent AHL numbers between the Stockton Heat and rebranded Calgary Wranglers, before it finally happened: the call-up to the NHL.
Pospisil made his NHL debut on November 4, 2023, knocking a loose puck past Seattle’s Philipp Grubauer for his first NHL goal. He was quickly promoted to playing on a line with fellow rookie Connor Zary and tenured veteran Nazem Kadri. This line was one of the few bright spots on a borderline hard-to-watch Flames team during 2023–24.
Pospisil notably centred Jonathan Huberdeau and Anthony Mantha to start the 24–25 season. For most of that season, he bounced around the lineup. Pospisil is a guy who can play up and down the lineup, whether it’s a role in the top six or a supporting role in the bottom 6.

His style of game
Pospisil plays a style of game that’s been slowly fading away from today’s NHL. He’s a pest. When Pospisil hops over the boards, he makes his presence known right away.
He regularly leads the team in hits, crashes the net and adds a level of physicality to any line he’s on.
Pospisil draws heavy comparisons to Matthew Tkachuk or Brad Marchand; you love him on your team, and absolutely hate playing against him.
Pospisil has faced his fair share of controversy regarding his fiery attitude. He’s been assessed three match penalties during his NHL career for boarding and elbowing. In 2019, Pospisil landed in hot water after reportedly attempting to enter the stands after a fan threw garbage at him.
He plays with a lot of fire. Maybe a little too much, as it seems like he’s toned it down a bit.
What’s next?
The biggest thing holding Pospisil back from his full potential has been his history of concussions.
Pospisil has dealt with concussions for a large part of his pro career, including one in 2022–23 that caused post-concussion syndrome. There were rumours that one was severe enough that it could have ended his career, but obviously that didn’t happen.
Pospisil suffered another concussion in the 25–26 preseason that shelved him for four months.
When players have a history of concussions, every impact matters. Pospisil’s style of game doesn’t do him any favours either.

Pospisil has found himself in a diminishing role since his return. He played most of his shortened 25–26 season on the 3rd and 4th line, posting just three points in 22 games.
Pospisil has toned down his physical style of play quite a bit since his rookie year. Whether that was management telling him to relax, or the toll his concussions have taken on him, we don’t know.
But if Pospisil can’t throw the body around like he used to, he could be on the outside looking in. Pospisil is never gonna be a guy scoring 40 goals or showing off flashy moves. His game is very meat and potatoes, back-to-basics hockey.
Is his time in Calgary over?
It’s plausible that Pospisil could be on his way out of Cow-Town. Pospisil is a dark-horse trade candidate for the Flames this summer, but don’t expect a big return.
It seems Pospisil has hit his ceiling as a Flame. If the Flames plan to bury him on the 4th line, Adam Klapka is playing the role just fine.
Pospisil would really benefit from a fresh start; the Panthers, Flyers or Canadiens would certainly take a chance on him.
It would hurt to see Pospisil go, but don’t be shocked if he’s moved between now and the 2027 deadline.
