Calgary Flames recall AHL all-star Matt Coronato

The Calgary Flames announced this morning that they have recalled Matt Coronato from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.

This comes on the heels of Martin Pospisil‘s injury sustained in the Flames’ previous game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Though Pospisil appears to have avoided the worst, he’s expected to be out until the all-star break. The Flames had just one extra forward on the roster, the recently recalled Adam Klapka, and needed reinforcements to fill the hole in their top-six.

Enter: Matt Coronato.

Though his NHL start this season didn’t go as well as some expected putting up just one goal and two points in 11 games, he has absolutely torched the AHL since joining the Wranglers.

In 27 games with the Wranglers, Coronato has amassed 12 goals and 29 points. He leads the team in goals and points despite playing nine fewer games than the next highest scorers, and is among the league leaders in points and points-per-game.

His AHL dominance earned him an all-star nod, as he was named to the Pacific Division squad alongside start goalie Dustin Wolf and head coach Trent Cull.

Where will Coronato slot in?

The obvious answer here is the slot vacated by Pospisil, on the right side of the second line with Nazem Kadri and Connor Zary.

Coronato’s skillset is designed for top-six duties, and it makes a lot of sense to simply slot him back in on that line.

The Flames host the Edmonton Oilers tonight for a Hockey Night in Canada Battle of Alberta matchup. What a way to get back to the big leagues.
