The regular season is now upon us and the Calgary Flames were scheduled to open the season with a single game at home. The Winnipeg Jets were the visitors—a team the Flames would surely be hungry to beat given they edged out of the last playoff spot by the Jets last year.
For the bulk of the game, it was all Winnipeg. The Flames were entirely ineffective at 5v5 when it came to generating high-danger chances, or any offence at all. However, it was a game that Jacob Markstrom kept the Flames in from start to finish—somewhat of a rarity last season so here’s to hoping it’s more the norm this time around. Fortunately for the Flames, their special teams were successful at turning the limited chances into goals. With both a power play and shorthanded goal in the game, the Flames were able to gain the upper hand. Despite blowing three separate one-goal leads, the Flames hung on and scored the go-ahead goal with under 90 seconds in the game.
