The Calgary Flames played host to the Anaheim Ducks in a game between two teams who are not making the playoffs this year. For the Flames, their position in the NHL Draft Lottery could be sweetened if they string together a few losses while the teams around them win, while the Ducks are more or less locked in as the NHL’s 30th-place team.
In other words, while both teams aren’t playing for much, Anaheim winning has a higher net benefit for the Flames—which was exactly what happened.

- The Flames were outshot but not by a significant margin. The two teams traded periods where Anaheim had the better first and thirds, while Calgary had the better second.
- Calgary was more physical by a decent margin with 11 more hits, while coincidentally also winning 11 more faceoffs.

- Several different leads were traded between the two teams, but Alex Killorn scoring two goals in the third period was the difference-maker as the Flames couldn’t find the equaliser.
- Andrei Kuzmenko continues to be a bright spot as he potted two goals, including one highlight reel dazzler.

- Both teams took a while before getting their first shot attempts of the game, but Anaheim pulled away and had more control of the shot pressure throughout the game.
- Calgary’s push came in the third but it was too late as Anaheim restored their two-goal lead which put a hamper in the Flames’ comeback.
- Neither team was particularly good at getting high-quality shots. Both teams had spreads that were more random than not.
- Calgary barely got any slot chances at all, and their net-front goal came off a great tip-in from Kuzmenko, but the lack of slot shot volume is no recipe for success in the modern NHL.
5v5 Corsi
- Most of this game was played at 5v5 as just over four minutes were played on the power play, and the Flames weren’t able to pull Jacob Markstrom for the extra attacker at the end of the game.
- Because of that, the same data story is seen where Anaheim pulled ahead early in the game and stayed ahead.
- As mentioned, the shots were quite random for both teams.
- However, the Ducks still managed more slot chances while the Flames tended to shoot from further away, especially between the blue line and the faceoff circles.
