Now that a competitive sports betting market is available in Ontario, there are many different excellent options from which Ontarians can choose to place their wagers. Of those options, few are quite as stellar as FanDuel Sportsbook.

Is it legal to bet on FanDuel in Ontario?

Yes. FanDuel is a fully-licensed and legal sports betting provider in the province. It operates in compliance with rules and regulations designated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

However, there are a couple of rules by which you must abide if you wish to play on FanDuel legally. First and foremost, you must be 19 years old or older to place a wager. AGCO rules mandate that all sports bettors have celebrated 19 birthdays or more, and you should be prepared to verify your age to FanDuel through your government-issued identification.

The other restriction is geographic. You may not bet on FanDuel Sportsbook if you are seated within any other province in the nation. Even if you are just across the provincial border in Manitoba or Quebec, you will be denied service. FanDuel uses sophisticated geolocation verification software to triangulate your position within Ontario. If your position cannot be verified – for whatever reason – FanDuel will automatically disallow you from completing a wager until you rectify the situation.

Assuming that you meet those two conditions, however, there is nothing stopping you from playing and betting on FanDuel until your heart’s content.

Getting started with FanDuel Sportsbook

The good news is that it takes no more than a few minutes to get underway with FanDuel Sportsbook. You should be able to place your first wager in the time it takes to brew some tea or coffee.

Downloading the app

If you plan to access FanDuel Sportsbook through your laptop, you can move onto the next step of the process already. However, if you use a mobile device – a tablet or smartphone – it’s a good idea to go ahead and get the proper app downloaded and installed.

  • Follow our link to reach the FanDuel browser-based site.
  • At the bottom of the main page, there is a section entitled “FanDuel Apps.”
  • Choose the link for the correct format to access the download page for your device.
  • Install the app on your device like you would any other type of app.
  • Once you’ve got the app ready to go, open it to the lobby.

Registering for a FanDuel account

The next step is to create your FanDuel profile. You’ll need to go through the registration procedure and be ready to carve out your personal space in the FanDuel Sportsbook constellation.

  • Look for the green and white button that says “Join Now” on the app’s main screen.
  • Press this button to access FanDuel’s registration screens.
  • On the first screen, you’ll need to enter your full name, phone number, and email address. Then, press “Continue.”
  • On the second screen, you’ll have to furnish your job title, industry, and home address.
  • Finally, you’ll need to provide a date of birth and login credentials. You’ll also have to agree to the terms and conditions on the app.
  • After all your information is in the system, your new account should be up and running.

Depositing on FanDuel Sportsbook

Now that you’ve established a presence on FanDuel, it’s time to fund your account. Head to the cashier and choose from one of the following options to make your first infusion into your profile:

  • Visa credit card
  • Interac
  • PayPal

The minimum deposit amount that you can choose is CAD$10. Regardless of the method you choose, funding your account should take no more than a few seconds to complete.

Make your first bet with FanDuel Sportsbook

Finally, you’ve arrived at the last step in the process. It’s time to start your wagering career with FanDuel Sportsbook.

  • Head back to the main lobby.
  • The first place to look is in the left-hand column of the display. The top item in that area is FanDuel’s search function, which allows you to search for the teams, sports, and games you already have in mind.
  • If you don’t have a clear picture about what wager you want to make yet, then you can peruse the rest of the column. Popular sports and links to other types of games are in the top box of the column, then a complete list of sports with active betting markets follows.
  • Pick the sport you want to bet, and look for the name of the league with your desired target games. Once you choose the league, you’ll see a complete listing of all the different games on that day’s slate.
  • The three standard wagers for most listings are point spreads, moneylines, and totals. However, if you want to explore other types of wagering options, look for the “More Wagers” link at the bottom right corner of each listing.
  • Simply press the button corresponding to the bet you want to make. Your choice(s) will automatically populate your betslip in the right-most column of the display. You’ll also see any options for parlays, too.
  • From there, designate the amount of your wager, then press the green and white button at the bottom to finalize your bet.

After you’ve made whatever first bet you want to make, it’s time to settle in and wait to see how the games play out. You may also receive opportunities to make wagers after the game begins or cash out your wager before the final whistle. Keep an eye on your betslip and the middle portion of the main display – where live bets are often listed – as you watch the match.

Betting Markets on FanDuel Sportsbook

Not everyone wants to confine their wagering to the four major sports. Thankfully, FanDuel Sportsbook has plenty of different sports you can bet. Here are your options in Ontario:

  • Australian rules football
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • Mixed martial arts
  • Motor racing
  • Politics
  • Rugby
  • Soccer
  • Tennis

One unique offering found on this list is labelled “TSN.” FanDuel sorts out the games that The Sports Network is offering that day across its five channels. If you are an avid fan of TSN, it’s a helpful way to unite both your viewing and sports betting activities.

Types of wagers on FanDuel Sportsbook

Now, with so many choices for sports to play, there are also many different ways to cast a bet on FanDuel Sportsbook. The types of wagers you’ll find on the app include:

  • Point spreads – Point spreads, or spread bets, are basic wagers about the eventual margin of victory in a contest or match. FanDuel estimates which team will win and by how many points, and you wager whether you believe that estimate to be too low for the favourite or too high for the underdog.
  • Moneylines – Moneylines are fundamental bets about which team will win a game. The manner in which they win is irrelevant. However, beginning bettors may struggle with the payout ratios that moneylines use, which can be confusing or intimidating at first.
  • Totals – Totals, or the over/under, are wagers concerned with the total points that two teams will combine to score in a given match. FanDuel produces its best guess for what the combined amount will be, and you bet whether the actual total will be “over” or “under” the estimate. The distribution of points among the teams is immaterial to the resolution of the wager.
  • Propositions – Propositions, or prop bets, posit questions about statistics or other events that may or may not come to pass during the course of a contest, match, or game. How you wager effectively boils down to whether you are answering “yes” or “no” to the question at hand. Props are usually not focused on macroevents during the game, such as its final outcome, and tend to use smaller pieces of the game as their subject matter.
  • Futures – Futures are long-term wagers about the cumulative outcome of many games or matches. Typically, you’ll find futures betting for end-of-season championships or individual award winners. Futures are also common for discrete tournament events, and are the most commonly-used bet type for professional golf betting.
  • Parlays – Parlays combine several single bets into one amalgamated wager. You must include 2 or more single bets, known as “legs,” on your betslip in order to trigger parlay eligibility with FanDuel. Parlays are high-risk, high-reward wagers because they require your predictions to be perfect in order to pay out.
  • Live betting – Live betting, or in-game wagering, is a type of proposition wager that occurs only after a game is underway. They tend to focus on many of the same types of events that regular props do, but in even smaller chunks. It’s not uncommon to see live betting options for the outcomes of single plays during a game.

Banking options on FanDuel Sportsbook

Because deposits are the lifeblood of sportsbooks and withdrawals are the carrot that keeps bettors coming back, it’s important that you have options to move money around in your sportsbook account. FanDuel Sportsbook has several ways to transfer funds both directions.

The methods that FanDuel Sportsbook offers to deposit money into your account are:

  • Visa credit cards

  • PayPal

Withdrawing

For taking money out of your account, FanDuel lists several different options.

What we like about FanDuel Sportsbook

Needless to say, with a top brand like FanDuel Sportsbook, there are many things to appreciate. In particular, the following elements seem to be where FanDuel really shines.

  • Competitive odds – It’s always a good idea to shop around for the best odds on a given wager. When you have, literally, dozens of sportsbooks at your fingertips in Ontario, it would be foolish not to look for the best deal, either in terms of the odds or the payouts (or both). So, we encourage you to compare, but we find that FanDuel Sportsbook consistently ranks as one of the apps with the most competitive odds in the province.
  • Live betting – FanDuel offers a deep and diverse set of live betting options each day. As mentioned earlier, it even parses out its live games for TSN viewers so that they can stay up to date on the five channels. If you want to keep your options open after the opening puck drop, tip-off, or kick-off, FanDuel might be the place to go.
  • App navigation – Although it’s a simple thing, few apps can match FanDuel’s ease-of-use and navigability. Every sport, game, and bet is easy to find with a button press or two. It’s even easy to find help with FanDuel’s extensive searchable FAQ section.

Elements FanDuel Sportsbook could improve

FanDuel Sportsbook is great, but it isn’t perfect. There are a few areas of note that could stand some attention from the staff at FanDuel in order to make the experience better and more streamlined for customers, including:

  • Banking options – The first issue with FanDuel Sportsbook is its paucity of banking options. Having no more than three ways to move money around is simply not enough, particularly in comparison to other apps in the province. Many bettors who might otherwise wish to become loyal FanDuel players are liable to find themselves unable to continue because they don’t use any of the three methods listed for their finances.
  • Support options – FanDuel’s major FAQ section is both a blessing and a curse for the app because FanDuel clearly rests too much of its emphasis on the database as its first line of customer support. There is a live chat function available, but it’s at the bottom of the help page, and the only other way to reach out is through email. FanDuel would be well-served to add a 24/7 phone line to its customer support suite and move the support options above the fold on its help centre page.
  • Help centre page updates – One other issue with the massive help centre is that some of the help centre pages either don’t address the search prompts or contain information that is out of date or incorrect. In one case, the informational page contained the relevant information for United States customers, despite being on the Canadian version of the site. It’s likely a difficult database to manage, but it still needs quite a bit of work.
