The Calgary Flames were trying to get back into the win column after losing four games in a row in regulation on home ice. With just one game remaining in the homestand and before the All-Star break, the Flames put forth a poor performance against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks, but a shutout from Jacob Markstrom did the job for the team.
Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!
Game events
- Based on the traditional stats, things looked even between the two teams, which in itself is a problem for Calgary if they’re even with Chicago.
- The Flames were outright putrid in the first period and were lucky to have the score tied at zero. Chicago had many high-danger shots that were turned away by Markstrom.

All situations Corsi
- From shot attempts alone, the two teams looked even, and in fact, the Flames pulled away in the third period.
- The Flames didn’t have much structure and they didn’t get that many high-danger shots at all. This is partly due to the line changes that Ryan Huska cooked up.
- By the final buzzer, the two teams looked even enough in terms of shot share and danger levels, but the lone goal power play by Calgary was the difference-maker, obviously.
5v5 Corsi
- The Flames’ third period set them apart from the Blackhawks, and it was definitely a response from a team that was desperate to not lose five in a row on home ice. It worked out for Calgary in the end.
- Shot location charts like this kind of indicate neither team had particularly good games at 5v5. There’s too much sparseness in the high-danger areas and also no goals were scored at even strength.
- That can be chalked up to good defence, bad offence, or both.
- Astoundingly, both teams combined for eight shots in the neutral zone at 5v5(!!)
