With last night’s victory against the Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom found himself a unique place in NHL history regarding Swedish goaltenders.
The shutout victory last night, the nineteenth of his career, was career win number 200 for Markstrom a feat only accomplished by two other Swedish goaltenders. As it stands right now, Markstrom is third all-time in wins by a Swedish goaltender and it’s likely he will rise a bit more by the end of the season.

Although he will most likely never catch recent Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Henrik Lundqvist, Markstrom has the ability to sneak past Tommy Salo to have the second-most wins by a Swedish goaltender by the end of the season. Fans of “team tank” may not love that, but eleven more wins from Markstrom based on how he is playing is not out of the question at all.
If you look down the list, Linus Ullmark could be the biggest contender to usurp Markstrom down the line as through just 223 games played, Ullmark sits at an astounding 126 wins. If the Bruins keep him and continue to be as dominant as they have been then Markstrom may eventually drop a spot.
All that being said, Markstrom has had one heck of a career so far and he still has time left. He sits with 90 wins as a Flames goalie, and although it’s hard to see him racking up 54 more wins in a Flames uniform to pass Rejean Lemelin, it makes him one of the more successful goaltenders in team history.
