All situations Corsi

  • The Flames didn’t give up too many shots against despite the Corsi being closer. This was largely due to more shot blocks.
  • That said, Calgary was better at generating shots regardless and they didn’t allow much in the third period despite playing in shutdown mode.
  • Here’s the biggest kicker, it was actually Calgary’s power play that changed the tide of the game. More on this below.
  • Looking at shot locations, the Flames continue to get more shots from closer to the net.
  • Anaheim was largely unable to get shots from in the slot at all with very few high-danger chances.

5v5 Corsi

  • As mentioned, the Flames’ power play made a huge difference. Looking at the shot attempts at 5v5, the Ducks were actually the better team.
  • Nearly a full period’s worth of hockey was played not at 5v5, and Calgary won those minutes.
  • The Flames were actually not too effective at 5v5 with their shot attempts. When looking at this chart compared to the all situations chart, the shot spread looks like it may go more in Anaheim’s favour.
  • That said, it wasn’t like the Ducks dominated at 5v5, Calgary just wasn’t as sharp. Their special teams did the heavy lifting in preventing the Ducks from gaining much momentum.
