Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 28: Kadri picks up two points against Avalanche, Calgary blows third period lead to lose

The Calgary Flames kicked off their road trip with a visit to Denver to face off against the Colorado Avalanche. The game was a wild one with a total of 11 goals scored between the two teams and four lead changes.

Nazem Kadri opened the scoring against his former team, while Nathan MacKinnon capped it all off of with a game-winner in the final minutes of the third. Between those two goals, the Flames came back once down 2–1, then let the Avalanche tie it up after going up 3–2.

However, toward the end of the second period, the Flames scored twice to put up a commanding 5–3 lead heading into the final period. Unfortunately the merchants of third period comebacks were swindled in Denver as Colorado would instead score three unanswered goals to pick up the win in regulation.

Interestingly when looking at the shot charts, the Avalanche scored all of their goals either net front or to the left of Daniel Vladar (from his perspective) and the Flames scored all of their goals either net front to the right of Alexandar Georgiev. Maybe the two teams watched plenty of video on the opposing goaltenders and found some weaknesses, maybe it was just a pure coincidence.

The Flames played the majority of the game short a defenceman as Chris Tanev played one shift before being hurt by an awkward hit. Hopefully he isn’t out long-term.

Charts from the setback are below.
