Calgary Flames

Martin Pospisil has been a force at the World Championships thus far

The 2024 IIHF World Championships is just under a week old, and there have already been a bunch of fun storylines to follow along with some great performances and upsets throughout the tournament.

One player that has been making headway has been Calgary Flames forward Martin Pospisil—and he has been making noise for a lot of reasons—most of it in a positive way. Pospisil was not expected to be an NHLer with the Flames this past season and I don’t think anyone had him being a top contributor for the Slovaks this early on, but Pospisil has been a force to begin the tournament. So, let’s take a look at what has made him so dominant.

A pain to play against

Like his time throughout the regular season with the Flames, Pospisil has been up to his old antics of being an absolute sore to play against. He has been getting in everyone’s faces that he possibly could and driving the opposition nuts. It made Pospisil extremely effective this past year in Calgary, and it is making him as effective, maybe even more, throughout the first four games of this tournament.

You can look no further than how he drove Team USA’s captain and Ottawa Senators star Brady Tkachuk up a wall in their game a few days ago. Tkachuk was not at all happy with Pospisil, and he just shrugged it off like he had done it plenty of times before.

Pospisil has been so much fun to watch in that regard early on.

Piling up the points

Throughout Pospisil’s time growing through the ranks as a Flames prospect, he was never a guy that was expected to put up a boatload of points, that was true this past year with the Flames as he only had 24 points in 63 games.

Through his first four games at the World Championships, however, Pospisil has two goals and four assists for six points, which places him tied for third in the entire tournament in scoring only behind Connor Bedard and Roman Josi. I would say that is pretty nice company to be in.

He has been driving play for the Slovaks, getting to all the dirty areas on the ice, and has made things happen. I don’t think anyone expected Pospisil to put up the points he has been early on, especially after only playing one NHL season, but the World Championships have proved to be a place in recent memory to see more unknown players have breakout performances.

Pospisil was also awarded with the Player of the Game after his performance against Team Kazakhstan where he finished with two goals and was a force all game long.

Pospsil has been showing that on the world stage thus far, and we can only hope that it continues for the rest of the tournament.

Gaining momentum into next season

Pospisil has been just great thus far in the tournament, and history has proved that when a player has a great World Championship, it usually leads into the next season. You can look no further than in 2021 when Andrew Mangiapane was named tournament MVP and then had his best career season in 2021–22 recording 35 goals and 55 points. Or last year when MacKenzie Weegar was named the tournament’s best defenceman and then also proceeded to have his best season with 20 goals and 52 points.

If Pospisil can finish this tournament strong, there is no telling what he can achieve next season for the Flames. He has been playing centre thus far and has looked great, the Flames do need more centre depth, and if Pospisil can blossom into an NHL centre, it would be great for a team that absolutely needs it.

Regardless of how the tournament finishes for Pospisil and the Slovaks, we can say he has been a treat to watch.
