Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 17: Back and forth game goes the distance as Calgary bests Florida in shootout

The first matchup between the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers finally happened. The superstars of the summer blockbuster faced off as Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, and Matthew Tkachuk faced their former teams in a Florida matinee. A highly anticipated matchup ended up being a nail-biter as it went the distance, requiring a fifth shootout round to settle the score.

The Flames had three separate leads, first getting up 2–0, then 3–2, then 4–3, but in all three instances, they all allowed the Panthers to tie the game up. Because of Calgary’s inability to hold down a lead, it turned the game into tight battle all the way through to the shootout.

Notably, Adam Ruzicka picked up two goals and an assist for his first career three-point game, while Tkachuk would be the only player in the history-making trade to score a point, as Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar were held off the scoreboard. However, Huberdeau got the last laugh as he was a scored in the shootout to keep the Flames from losing after Esa Lundell scored first, and Rasmus Andersson scored in the fifth round to secure the win.

The Flames never trailed, but they definitely made it interesting at every step.
