The Calgary Flames officially unveil their 2023–24 opening night roster

The Calgary Flames are ready for the opening night and 2023–24 season.

With rosters being due at 3 p.m. MDT today, the Flames had a handful of decisions to make in order to shore up their roster. Who made it and who ended up just missing the cut? Let’s take a look:

Calgary’s roster

The opening night roster came to a total of XX players: XX forwards, X defencemen, and two goalies.

Forwards:

  • #10 – Jonathan Huberdeau “A”
  • #11 – Mikael Backlund “C”
  • #15 – Dryden Hunt
  • #17 – Yegor Sharangovich
  • #18 – A.J. Greer
  • #20 – Blake Coleman
  • #27 – Matt Coronato
  • #28 – Elias Lindholm “A”
  • #29 – Dillon Dube
  • #63 – Adam Ruzicka
  • #71 – Walker Duehr
  • #88 – Andrew Mangiapane
  • #91 – Nazem Kadri

Defensemen:

  • #4 – Rasmus Andersson “A”
  • #8 – Chris Tanev “A”
  • #16 – Nikita Zadorov
  • #48 – Dennis Gilbert
  • #52 – MacKenzie Weegar
  • #55 – Noah Hanifin
  • #82 – Jordan Oesterle

Goaltenders:

  • #25 – Jacob Markstrom
  • #80 – Dan Vladar

Injured

  • #21 – Kevin Rooney
  • #22 – Jakob Pelletier
  • #58 – Oliver Kylington

The team also made the following moves to shore up their roster today. The first is by placing Jakob Pelletier on IR. The young forward is going to be out for multiple months, but interesting that the team only placed him on IR versus LTIR. They also assigned Adam Klapka, Cole Schwindt, and Ilya Solovyov to the AHL in order to make room to claim A.J. Greer off of waivers.

The team also currently sits at ~$2.44M over the cap, which means that a subsequent paper move was likely made. This is probably placing Kylington onto LTIR as his $2.5M cap hit would cover the overage.

This all comes as little surprise, based on the fact the team tipped their cap to the moves yesterday. That being said, the roster ended up looking slightly different than many had expected due to injuries.

The fun gets underway on Wednesday night!
