The Calgary Flames faced off against the Arizona Coyotes in a game that had major implications for the NHL Draft Lottery. The two teams could have finished the night tied in standing points if the Flames lost in regulation, or the Coyotes wouldn’t be able to catch the Flames at all if Calgary won in any manner.
Of course, the latter of the two scenarios happened and Calgary found themselves 24th overall, and they now cannot finish any lower than 26th overall. Had they lost the game, they would have still been in the running for 28th overall. So the two points they gained versus the Coyotes could have had a four-place swing on their lottery odds with the potential for them to finish with even worse odds.
A good win for Dustin Wolf and Co., a bad win for the future of the franchise.
The Flames came back from a multi-goal deficit which included another goal for Andrei Kuzmenko, a record-setting goal from Yegor Sharangovich, and a two-goal game from Nazem Kadri.
