Flames Sunday Census: Should the Flames re-sign Morgan Frost?

Morgan Frost is currently in the last year of his deal, and the Flames have a big decision to make. The 27-year-old will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity. Now that we are in this new age of NHL contracts, as the cap continues to go up, this is Frost’s chance to get a big contract. He plays a position that the Flames are in dire need of, and he plays on the first power play unit for the team. The Flames are looking to have players who fit the timeline of their rebuild and who look like they can be a fit for the new core that is going to come in. That begs the question: should the Flames re-sign Frost? We asked, you answered.

Should Frost be re-signed

We presented the poll below to our readers.

Yes, no matter the cost

17% of our readers believe the Flames need to bring back Frost no matter what. At the end of the day, the two best centres on the Flames team are Morgan Frost and Mikael Backlund, and Backlund is not getting any younger. This team needs centres, and Frost is by far the one that provides the most upside and skill. When it comes to their prospect pipeline, the top centres are Cole Reschny and Jack Hextall. If Reschny develops into a top-line centre, Frost could be a solid second-line option. There are two problems, though. The first thing is that Frost has shown flashes of incredible skill, but other times we don’t see that. The consistency isn’t there yet. Additionally, Frost will likely be looking for $8M and more for his next contract. Is that something the Flames want to pay up, potentially long term?

Yes, if short-term

This is likely what the Flames want. By doing this, they will continue to be able to fill a big hole on their roster, and they get to see what Frost can really be for the team. Some would argue that Frost has already shown what he is, as at 27 years old, there isn’t much development left for a player. However, the short-term deal will alleviate the risk of being stuck with a contract that doesn’t end up working with the new core. Despite this option, I don’t think Frost would be willing to sign short-term.

Absolutely not

This option might be best for the Flames’ future. The centre is on the youngers side of this years free agency class, and he is one of the top centres available. All this would lead to the Flames likely getting a solid package for the player. For a team focused on the future, capitalizing on a return like this is vital to successfully rebuild. This may just end up being an option the Flames go with, as we have seen them trade away players who are in the last year of their deal and are looking to capitalize on a big contract before. Almost 30% of our readers believe this is the path to take.

Time will tell

The Flames and Frost have until March one to see if staying with the Flames makes the most sense for both the player and the team. Conversations are most definitely ongoing between his camp and the organization now, but we will have to wait and see if anything comes out of it.
