The Calgary Flames continue to be stuttering along this season, and this is very much a trend across the entire system. The Wranglers are exactly .500 entering Thursday, despite their youthful core adjusting fairly well to professional hockey. Iginla is a name etched in Calgary Flames royalty. Now, the next Iginla in the Flames system is starting to impress in the WHL.
Let’s take a look at the past week in the Calgary Flames organization.
Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2002 or later.
Joe Iginla, Right Wing, Vancouver Giants, WHL
Background
Joe Iginla is the latest product of the Iginla hockey family. The 2008-born forward from Lake Country, British Columbia, started last season with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. After a midseason trade brought him to the Vancouver Giants, he proved to be a reliable middle-six WHL forward. This reliability translated to a ranking of the 200th-best player in the 2026 NHL draft by NHL Central Scouting.
The Flames jumped at the chance to get another Iginla into their system, and selected him with a third-round pick, 65th overall in this past draft.
Iginla is primarily an intelligent playmaking-play-supporting forward who thrives due to his quality hockey sense, puck skills, and compete level throughout his game. The main areas of improvement for Iginla include problematic skating mechanics/quickness, limitations in muscle mass, and overall scalability of his game to the next level.
There is no doubt about it: the Canadian forward has the heart, the willingness to physically engage, and an honest work ethic/motor.
Iginla’s Season so far by the numbers
Iginla undoubtedly has gotten significant bumps in opportunity since his WHL trade last season, and the numbers back it up.
This 2026–2027 campaign sees Iginla averaging 16:12 of TOI a game, with 3:17 of it being on the man advantage alone. Unsurprisingly, the playmaker also starts 45% of his 20 shifts in the offensive zone, with 28% in the neutral zone, and only 27% in the defensive zone.
Physically, Iginla engages in physical play at an extremely high rate of 18 puck battles per game, and despite only having a 39% win rate, he never backs down, hinting at endurance and confidence in his overall play. Additionally, the B.C. born forward blocks 0.27 shots per game, dishes out 0.27 hits, while also taking 0.73 hits against.
Iginla is also often a play facilitator, as he averages 73 puck touches per game, and despite having six giveaways to 2.5 takeaways per game, he is rarely defensively irresponsible, as he only has 0.13 errors leading to goals against. Further refinement in his handling will aid his 3.8 entries and 2 breakouts per game, as his deke success rate sits at 39%.
Passing is another area that Iginla is growing into as he dishes out 15 per game, to the tune of 79% accuracy.
Offensively, Iginla is a scoring chance generator. This is where he derives a significant portion of his value from. The Flames prospect has a stellar release on the go, reflected in his 68% shot accuracy on 4.9 shots per game and a 0.34 expected goals rate. Expect his point total to gain momentum, as his 54% Corsi For rating is an indication.
Where does Iginla fit within the organization?
Firstly, Iginla is quite raw and likely more of a long-term project for the Flames organization. He has lots to like in his game, from moderate hockey IQ to passing ability and raw compete level/physical upside. If Iginla can clean up his skating, refine some decision-making, and grow his muscle mass, he could realistically elevate his game to an NHL level.
If Iginla can find ways to elevate and upgrade his skating, and refine his hard skill, the work ethic and senses could realistically make him a bottom-6 checking forward with good complementary play support upside.
Calgary Flames prospect updates
AHL
- The Wranglers continue getting mixed results. The club split a pair of games with the Laval Rockets this past week. They first collected a 4–2 win against the Rockets on the 29th, only to drop their Halloween rematch 2–1.
- Despite the Wranglers sitting 6–6–0 on the 2026–2027 campaign, they occupy 4th in the AHL’s Pacific Division and are 11th overall in the entire league.
- Forward William Stromgren remains one of the best-performing prospects for the Wranglers, sitting as one of the few players over a point per game, resulting in a call-up to the Flames on the 30th. He even scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL appearance of the campaign on the 2nd.
- Forward William Stromgren and goaltender Arsenii Sergeev were called up to the Calgary Flames on the 30th. That same day, defenceman Kyle Walker and goaltender Owen Say were reassigned from the Rush to the Wranglers. On November 3rd, forward Ryan Hofer was recalled to the Wranglers, and forward Alex Campbell was reassigned to the Rush.
ECHL
- The Rapid City Rush are off to a hot start in the ECHL, and they carried that momentum into last week. The Rush went 2–0–0 in a pair of games against the New Mexico Goatheads, collecting a 4–3 win on the 30th and a commanding 6–1 win on the 31st.
- Rapid City currently sit 5–2-0 on the season, which is good for 1st in the ECHL’s Mountain Division, and 4th best in the entire league.
- The Rush currently have no Calgary Flames-affiliated prospects on their team.
Europe
- 2925 2nd rounder Theo Stockselius has slowly worked his way up the depth chart with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL, and appeared in a 3–0 win against HV-71 on the 29th, and a 3–2 win against Brynäs IF on the 30th. In the latter game, Stockselius even netted his 3rd goal of the season. He averaged over 16 minutes per match as well. The 2007-born forward is now appearing with Team Sweden at some U-20 international jr play.
NCAA
- University of Maine forward Jayden Lipinski is officially on the scoresheet, after generating an assist in the second of two games against the Boston University Terriers on the 31st. The two-way forward does add value in all three zones, but has struggled offensively this season. The WHL alum has largely served in a third-line role with Maine this season.
- 2025 6th-round forward Aidan Lane made his season debut on the 29th in Harvard’s first game against UMass. It only took a day later for the wrecking ball of a power forward to net his first goal of the season too in the Americans’ second game against UMass. Shifty playmaker and fellow Flames prospect, UMass forward Egor Barabanov put up two assists in the second game.
- Prospects Jack Hextall and Cullen Potter appeared in a Halloween matchup against UND and fellow Flames prospects Cole Reschny and Carson Carels. Potter, the playmaker/two-way pivot, was the prospect that stood out the most as he found the scoresheet with an assist in 17:32 of TOI. The American forward also has a +4 rating for his entire season. Carels had a -1 rating in his sole game appearance this past week.
- This past week, the University of Michigan’s seven game win streak got snapped. Defensive prospect Henry Mews continues to rebound quite well and is thriving as a puck-moving mobile skater. That being said, this past week saw him ice 11:47 of TOI in the 5–2 loss to Ohio State on the 31st, and 10:55 in Michigan’s 5–4 OTW the following day.
- Trevor Hoskins continues to be a playmaking sniping menace for Merrimack College. The junior had his third multi-point game of his season, and remains one of Merrimack’s most consistent forwards. Hoskins appeared in a pair of games against the University of Connecticut on the 30th (one assist) and 31st (two assists).
- The offensive weapon that is Ethan Wyttenbach keeps on giving as the forward netted an assist in Quinnipiac’s 5–1 victory against Providence College on the 31st. Look for Wyttenbach to be a leading scorer in the NCAA again this season.
WHL
- Forward prospect and 2026 3rd-round pick Joe Iginla had a stellar week, appearing in three games. His first matchup saw him net his 5th goal of the season in a game on the 28th against the Portland Winterhawks. The young forward then became a key secondary support forward in Vancouver’s 6–1 win against Victoria on the 30th. In Iginla’s third game, he had his first three-point outing of the season with a goal and two assists against the Prince George Cougars on November 1st.
- 2026 2nd-round forward Chase Harrington played only a single game this past week, a 4–3 SOL to Medicine Hat on the 30th. Despite the loss, Harrington continues his momentum this season, with two assists and a +2 rating. The mobile skating, playmaking, and physicality are blending seamlessly and creating chances for the young Canadian.
- It was a busy three-game week for Bode Laylin, as the 2026 6th-round defender appeared in three games. His only scoresheet contribution came in the first game of the week with an assist in the Hitmen’s game against Red Deer on the 30th. Teammate Jacob Leander appeared in only the latter two, a 3–2 SOL to Kamloops on the 1st, and a 3–1 win over Prince Albert on the 4th.
- Mace’o Phillips continues to adjust to the WHL, as he and the Tigers played three games this past week. The powerful shutdown defender posted an assist and a -3 rating across the three games combined.
Russia
- Yan Matveiko got moved to the VHL this week, as his frequent flyer miles continue to grow this season. The 2006-born forward posted a goal in his first match of the week, a 5–2 loss to HK Norilsk, on the 1st. He also appeared in a second game against Sokol Krasnoyarsk in a close 2–1 loss on the 4th.
