Calgary Flames select Aydar Suniev 80th overall with 2023 third-round pick

The Calgary Flames picked up Aydar Suniev, a Russian left winger playing out of the BCHL in 2022–23 with their 2023 third-round pick.

Suniev was born on November 16, 2004 in Kazan, Russia. He weighs in at 192 lbs (87kg) and stands at 6’2″ (188 cm).

He’s played across USA and Canada in various leagues, as well playing with U17 and U18 teams in Russia for short stints. His most recent season was his first full season in the BCHL where he was a top player with the Penticton Vees. His 90 points ranked third on the team while his 45 goals had him tied for first. In the playoffs, he posted nine goals and 14 assists over 15 appearances.

Suniev has the frame and skills to be an effective player. He was expected to go in the second or third round, and the Flames being able to get him at #80 is a very respectable outcome.
