In the middle of the May long weekend where most people are in the midst of kickstarting their summer months, the Calgary Flames continue to be hard at work and looked to have checked off one of the biggest to-dos of their offseason. They are set to promote Craig Conroy as Brad Treliving’s successor as the team’s next general manager.
Busy week for the Flames
Darren Dreger dropped during Sunday brunch that Craig Conroy would be named GM in the coming week.
Salim Valji then added that the Flames would make this announcement official on Tuesday after the long weekend. They were very thorough in their search and looked at nearly 40 candidates—far more than they were assumed to have looked at. From 30+ candidates down to the shortlist, it looked like Conroy was deemed as the best fit.
More to come for Calgary
This is just the first step of many that Calgary will take to alter the direction of the franchise for years to come. Who will Conroy bring aboard to his executive team? Will there be a spot for Jarome Iginla? Who will get the nod as coach? With so many questions left to answer, letting Conroy take the reins now is a good a time as any to right the ship in time for the 2023–24 to start.
Congratulations, Conroy!
