Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 62: Calgary beats Tampa Bay on Trade Deadline Eve

The Calgary Flames are undergoing massive amounts of change. With the latest unrestricted free agent traded in Noah Hanifin, their last game before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline was a big test of what this team could do.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Flames were shooting at 25% on the night, scoring six goals on just 24 shots.
  • Despite Calgary not having the king of shot blocking in Chris Tanev, they still had 12 more than the Lightning did, where the latter’s game did not focus on much blocking at all.
  • Calgary was smacked in the faceoff dot with Tampa Bay more than doubling up their faceoff wins.

All situations Corsi

  • The Lightning had the edge in Corsi, but Calgary’s three-goal swing in the second period was the turning point as Tampa couldn’t match.
  • Despite not needing it, the Flames added two more goals in the third period to completely stifle any attempt of a Lightning comeback.
  • The Flames kept driving to the net and it got them four goals from in close.
  • Mangiapane’s empty net goal from the penalty boxes came with just under eight minutes to go, as the Lightning were very aggressive with their extra-attacker aspirations.

5v5 Corsi

  • Aside from the empty-netter, the other five Flames goals came at 5v5. While it’s not great to not convert on power plays, still managing five goals at even strength is a good outcome any game.
  • The Lightning had their 5v5 goals coming in from in close as well.
  • With the Flames’ defence corps looking drastically different, they did a good job preventing the Lightning from getting too many good 5v5 chances all things considered.
