Calgary Flames

Calgary Flames trade Noah Hanifin to Vegas Golden Knights for Daniil Miromanov, a first and a conditional third-round pick

The number one defenceman available at the 2024 trade deadline is off the board. The Calgary Flames have traded Noah Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Ryan Leslie had it first.

This trade took a while to come together as there were a lot of moving parts. Here’s everything you need to know.

What the Calgary Flames are getting in return for Hanifin

The Flames will be receiving three assets in return for Hanifin.

  • Daniil Miromanov (D)
  • A first-round pick in either 2025 or 2026
  • A conditional third-round pick

There is a condition on each of the picks. The first-round pick will be in either 2025 or 2026, with the condition being that it will be the 2025 pick unless Vegas trades that pick away in which case it will be the 2026 pick.

The third-round pick becomes a second-round pick if Vegas wins a playoff round this year.

The return took hours to be announced, but we finally have all the details.

Salary retention on Hanifin

The Flames are retaining 50% of Hanifin’s $4.95M salary for the rest of his current contract which expires at the end of this season.

As well, the Philadelphia Flyers are retaining an additional 25% of his salary.

All in all, the Golden Knights get Hanifin for a cap hit of $1.2425M for this season.

Contract extension for Hanifin with Vegas

So far, there is no contract extension in place for Hanifin with Vegas. However, it is widely expected that Vegas will sign Hanfin to a long-term extension.

Vegas centre Jack Eichel is one of Hanifin’s best friends, which almost certainly played a role in Vegas aggressively pursuing Hanifin at the deadline.

A busy year for Craig Conroy

It’s been a very busy year for GM Craig Conroy. This trade marks the fifth he’s completed this season after trading away Tyler Toffoli, Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, and Chris Tanev earlier in the year.

The trade deadline is on Friday, March 8, 2024, so there is still time for Conroy to continue to make deals if he wants.
