The Calgary Flames are not in a good place. They know they’re in a slump, yet their on-ice performance looks like it’s something much worse. The Flames faced a 3–0 shutout defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night. The Flames’ struggles persisted as they extended their losing streak to four games and fell to a 2–4–1 record for the season. The Flames had a fairly empty crowd backing them as their start to the season has done absolutely nothing to inspire the fan base. Officially, attendance was logged at 16,897, which is less than 90% capacity, but even at that number, the crowd felt much emptier than that.
The Flames continued to grapple with offensive issues. They have now gone nearly six periods at home without scoring a goal. In their previous game against the New York Rangers, their only goal came a mere 75 seconds into the first period. As a result, the Saddledome crowd expressed their frustration through audible boos in the game’s final minutes.
Early in the first period, the St. Louis Blues capitalized on their opportunities. Kasperi Kapanen netted a shorthanded goal at 11:23. Shortly after, Nick Leddy extended the Blues’ lead to 2–0 at 13:24. This early two-goal deficit proved insurmountable for the Flames’ listless offence.
Jacob Markstrom was the only truly good player, recording 32 saves during the game. However, despite his performance, he couldn’t prevent the Flames from falling to another loss. Markstrom’s struggle to secure a win continues, as he has now gone winless in his last five starts. The Flames have provided next to no goal support for their goalie. In a season that looks to be Markstrom rebounding to being a quality starter, he’s been left out to dry.
Charts from the setback are below.
