With the Flames not living up to the heat in their name, and the Wranglers being one of the best teams in the entire AHL right now, Flames fans need to look towards the future. The ECHL is also underway, but the Flames have no affiliated prospects to the Rush this season. With most Flames prospects officially starting their respective seasons, it’s a busy time within the system.
Let’s take a look at the past week in the Calgary Flames organization.
Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2002 or later.
Calgary Flames prospect updates
AHL
- The Wranglers are off to a strong start with a 5–3–0 record for the 2026–2027 campaign. In the past week, they saw a brief pause in their momentum: a 5–4 loss to San Jose on the 16th, a 4–2 win over Bakersfield on the 17th, and a 3–2 loss to Ontario on the 20th.
- Despite the losses, the Wranglers currently sit first in the AHL’s Pacific Division, and 2nd overall in the entire AHL.
- This season had a big turnover from last year, but expect the youthful injections on the blueline (Wiebe, Benning, and Hurtig) and in net (Zarubin, and a full-time Sergeev) to be a turning point for the AHL franchise.
- Center Ben Jones was called up to the Calgary Flames on the 20th.
ECHL
- The Rapid City Rush began their season with a pair of wins against the Kansas City Mavericks on the 16th and 17th.
- No Flames-affiliated players are assigned to the Rush this season.
Europe
- 2025 2nd-round pick Theo Stockselius continues to get regular appearances in the SHL with Djurgårdens IF. The Swedish playmaker appeared in three games this past week, and even netted his 1st ever professional goal in a 3–2 OTL to Brynäs IF on the 15th. Stockselius also appeared in a game against the Malmo Redhawks on the 17th and against Frölunda HC on the 20th.
NCAA
- Goaltending prospect Yegor Yegorov secured his first-ever win in North American hockey with a 3–2 win against Robert Morris University on the 17th. Yegorov stopped 20/22 shots he faced in the game. Flames fans should not be surprised if the Russian hits some speed bumps in his adjustment to the smaller ice in North America.
- University of Michigan defender Henry Mews is back in play this action. The dynamic two-way transitional defender played a pair of games against the University of Denver on the 16th and 17th, where he found the scoresheet with an assist in each game.
- Egor Barabanov appeared in a pair of games against Northeastern University on the 16th and 17th. In the latter, Barabanov was handed 17 minutes of penalties. Talk about spiking a stat early in the season.
- Standout forward Trevor Hoskins played Minnesota State Univ. (Mankato) on the 16th and 17th. In the first matchup, his team secured a 4–3 OTW, where Hoskins found the scoresheet with two assists. In the second matchup, the Canadian generated an assist. The ever-responsible Hoskins continues to elevate his three-zone potency this season.
- Flame prospects continue to represent UND. Cole Reschny continues to be a stable all-around two-way forward in all three zones. The Canadian appeared in a pair of games against Bentley University on the 16th and 17th. In the first game, Reschny had his first multi-point outing of the season with a goal and an assist. Carels was a commanding presence from the blueline in both games, averaging 18:30 TOI and scoring an assist in each game, which stand as his first points at the NCAA level.
- Penn State forward Luke Misa continues to work his way up the lineup for his NCAA squad. The speedster played Quinnipiac on the 16th, where he netted his first goal of the season. He also played an unusual Tuesday night game against Robert Morris University. Look for his physicality and puck skills to improve this season.
- ASU has a different Flames prospect this year as 2022 7th-round pick Cade Littler continues to grow. Littler had the best weekend of his recent career, with regular shifts of 13:30 TOI and a goal in each of their games against UMass-Lowell on the 16th and 17th.
- Ethan Wyttenbach is back for another season of NCAA hockey after finishing as a finalist for the Hobey Baker last season. The Quinnipiac star leads all Flames-affiliated prospects with a 2.20 PPG by a wide margin. The American winger played on the 16th, in a 6–3 win against Penn State, where Wyttenbach netted a goal and two assists. Despite it being early in the NCAA season, this was Wyttenbach’s fourth multi-point game and his second three-point outing of the 26–27 campaign.
WHL
- 2026 2nd-rounder Chase Harrington continues to assert his dominant playstyle in the WHL. The soon-to-be 19-year-old appeared in one game this past week, a 3–2 SOW against the Seattle Thunderbirds. From his stellar skating, high-end physicality and puck skills, it’s hard not to see a top-9 forward in the making, at worst.
- The Calgary Flames have another reason to come to the Saddledome, as both Hitmen defenders Jacob Leander and Bode Laylin are Flames picks. Leander is proving to be a reliable stay-at-home defender with some growing pains playing in his first North American hockey season. Laylin is a more raw two-way transitional defender with strong mobility.
- 2025 3rd-round defender Mace’o Phillips is finding his groove in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers. The shutdown defender appeared in a 6–1 loss to Regina on the 16th and netted his 3rd assist of the season against Brandon in an 8–1 blowout win the following day.
OHL
- 2026 5th-round forward Simon Katolicky is off to a slower start for the season. The 6’5″ power forward derives the majority of his value from his physical play, motor, and play disruption rather than what he contributes on the scoresheet. He appeared in three games this past week, even scoring his 4th goal of the season in a 6–4 win against London on the 21st.
Russia
- 2026 2nd-rounder Alan Shaikhlislamov continues to have a strong early season. The sniper-power forward combo has served the 18-year-old well, as he earned a call-up to the KHL and appeared in just his second career professional game with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in their 2–0 loss to Admiral Vladivostok on the 19th.
- 2025 7th-rounder Yan Matveiko is having a mixed results season so far, as he keeps alternating between the MHL and the VHL. This past week, he appeared in a 3–2 MHL win against MHK Atlant Mytishchi on the 16th, where he secured a goal and an assist. He was then shipped to the VHL for a game on the 20th against Ryazan-VDV.
