Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 7: Calgary returns home but continues slump with loss against Rangers

The Calgary Flames faced off against the New York Rangers at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday night, hoping to break their recent losing streak. However, despite their efforts, they couldn’t quite find the back of the net often enough, resulting in a 3–1 loss.

Calgary had a strong start when Blake Coleman scored just 1:15 into the first period, assisted by Mikael Backlund. It was Coleman’s second goal of the season, giving the Flames a much-needed early lead. Despite that momentum, they weren’t able to get anything else past New York. The next goal came from Alexis Lafreniere, tying the game at 1–1 at 7:38 in the second period. With the game tied, the Rangers continued their momentum with Chris Kreider, netting New York’s second power play goal at 14:09, taking the lead, 2–1. Later in the second, Gustafsson extended the Rangers’ lead to 3-1 during 4-on-4 play.

The Flames outshot the Rangers 25–20 and dominated in scoring chances, but the Rangers’ goaltender, Igor Shesterkin, played a vital role in shutting down the Flames. Shesterkin made several crucial saves, frustrating the Flames’ efforts to close the gap. Despite the Flames’ seeing positive aspects in their game, they struggled on the power play, going zero-for-four; and struggled with their penalty kill, going three-for-five. Special teams and goaltending tilted this game against the Flames.

Adam Ruzicka sustained an apparent upper-body injury due to a hit by Jimmy Vesey and did not return to the game. Ruzicka’s absence was felt as the Flames searched for offensive opportunities. The Flames will look to regroup as they host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, hoping to end their recent string of losses and regain their winning momentum.

Charts from the setback are here.
