The Calgary Flames made a quick pitstop up the highway to face off against the Edmonton Oilers for 2022–23’s first iteration of the Battle of Alberta.
The Flames opted to start Daniel Vladar in net to give Jacob Markstrom the night off—a part of a new Flames strategy to not overwork their starter, and also perhaps bringing a psychological flair to the goaltending battle.
The Battle of Alberta is never a dull one as the Flames got off to a roaring start and the Oilers spent the latter half of the game mounting their comeback. The scoring chances never stopped, but the scoring did as the Flames hung on to win 4–3.
