2021–22 Consolidated Fantasy Hockey Rankings

NHL training camps are set to open in just over a week’s time, and fantasy drafts will be taking place over the next month as opening night approaches.

Every league is different, but the overall rankings of players generally stays fairly consistent across leagues and formats of fantasy hockey.

We’ve put together consolidated draft rankings that takes the trimmed mean of various rankings put together by others. Essentially, outliers both at the top and bottom of the boards are removed and the average is taken. Among those represented are Yahoo!’s Pre-Draft Rankings, Dom Luszczyszyn’s rankings from The Athletic, The Hockey News, CBS, and NHL dot com’s rankings.

The value of consolidated fantasy rankings

These rankings are handy because they help identify consensus players at each draft slot. Using a trimmed mean helps to remove the effects of any crazy outliers from the data set and ensure those bold predictions from one outlet don’t skew the overall feeling of where a particular player should go (for example: Alec Martinez is ranked in the top-10 on ESPN’s list, and nowhere near that anywhere else).

A few interesting tidbits from the rankings we noticed when putting them together. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Connor McDavid is the number one player on every single board. After that, it’s a toss-up between Leon Draisaitl and Nathan MacKinnon, and then a large pool of players that could go anywhere in the top-10.

There are 17 players ranked in the top-10 on at least one board: 13 forwards, three defensemen, and just one goalie: Andrei Vasilevskiy.

340 players were ranked in the top 250 on at least one board.

Breaking it down by team:

• The Avalanche, Bruins, Lightning and Oilers are the only teams with multiple players in the top 10.
• The Lightning, Avalanche, and Rangers each have three players in the top 25, the most out of all teams.
• The Bruins, Oilers, Maple Leafs, Jets, Stars, and Golden Knights each have six players in the top 100.
• In the top 250, the Stars, Canucks, and Flyers have the most players ranked with 12, followed by the Panthers 11, and the Hurricanes with 10.

For the ranking list below, the far left column gives you the rank on our consolidated board, while the trimmed mean column gives the mean value for added context for differences between close players.
