Perhaps no team across the entire NHL has been more active on the trade market in recent years than the Calgary Flames. While the 2026-27 season will likely be slower in that regard, the team still has some big pieces it could move before the 2027 trade deadline. With that in mind, here’s a refresher on every trade clause on the Calgary Flames roster.
Full NMC (no-movement clause)
Jonathan Huberdeau
Jonathan Huberdeau is the only Flame with a full-NMC for the duration of his contract. It’s also probably the least necessary NMC in the NHL. Let’s be honest, this clause won’t be triggered anytime soon, or maybe ever. His recent production, giant contract, and major hip surgery are enough of a no-movement clause. Perhaps this NMC comes up down the line when Huberdeau’s contract is nearly complete, but for now, no team will be looking to acquire Huberdeau anytime soon, so it’s a moot point.
NMC (no-movement clause)
Mikael Backlund
Mikael Backlund is the only other Flame with an NMC, and understandably so. The longtime Flame and team captain committed to the organization during the mass exodus in 2023 and then again in 2025 and was rewarded with an NMC. With Jarome Iginla’s franchise record for games played within reach, there’s no reason for Backlund to waive his NMC this season when he’s so close to etching his name in the Flames’ history books.
With that said, unlike Huberdeau, Backlund’s clause shifts to a modified no-trade clause on January 1, 2028. He will then have a 10-team no-trade list for the remainder of the 2027-28 season. In other words, the Flames could trade Backlund to any team outside of his 10-team list without his permission as of January 1st, 2028.
M-NTC (15-team no-trade list)
Jacob Middleton
Newly acquired Jacob Middleton has the third-best trade protection on the roster with a 15-team no-trade list. Basically, the veteran defenceman can block a trade to 15 of 31 teams and can be traded freely to the remaining 16. A bit of a head-scratcher for a player who is basically a bottom-pairing defender, but you can’t fault Conroy, as it was Bill Guerin and the Wild who gave Middleton his current contract.
Based on recent reports, however, it seems unlikely Middleton will be moved anytime soon, so this clause probably doesn’t come up until 2028-29 when he’s a pending UFA.
M-NTC (10-team no-trade list)
Yegor Sharangovich
Yes, Yegor Sharangovich somehow swindled the Flames into giving him a 10-team no-trade list. Sharangovich can submit a list of 10 teams he can’t be traded to, but given his recent production, there are probably 31 teams that wouldn’t want to acquire him anyway.
It is worth noting that during the final year of his contract in 2029-30, the NTC moves to an 8-team no-trade list, giving the Flames a little more flexibility if they want to trade him.
M-NTC (8-team no-trade list)
Morgan Frost
This is undoubtedly the most relevant trade clause on the roster right now. As a pending UFA entering the 2026-27 season, Morgan Frost’s name will be in trade rumours from now until the 2027 trade deadline in March. All signs point to an eventual move out of Calgary, meaning Frost’s 8-team no-trade list will almost certainly come into play at some point.
The veteran centre can submit a list of eight teams he won’t go to and can be openly traded to the remaining 23 teams.
Upcoming trade clauses
Kevin Bahl (M-NTC starting 2027-28)
Kevin Bahl will receive an 8-team no-trade list starting in 2027-28 through the remainder of his contract that concludes in 2031.
Dustin Wolf (M-NTC starting 2028-29)
As part of his recent seven-year mega extension, Dustin Wolf will receive a 10-team no-trade list in the final five years of his contract, starting with the 2028-29 season. For the next two seasons, he will have no trade protection.
Simon Nemec (M-NTC starting 2030-31)
The newest Flame, Simon Nemec, will have no trade protection for the first four years of his five-year contract. In the final season (2030-31), he will receive a 10-team no-trade list.
Matt Coronato (M-NTC starting 2030-31)
Matt Coronato has basically the same setup as Nemec. He has no trade protection for the duration of his contract, until the final season in 2030-31, when he receives a 10-team no-trade list.
