Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Misa, Mews light up OHL

Brampton Steelheads forward Luke Misa continues to excel playing with sensation Porter Martone and Carson Rehkopf, who scored 52 goals and 95 points for the Kitchener Rangers last season. Misa continues his hot hand, coming off five points last week.

Ottawa 67’s defenceman Henry Mews had a very productive week as well. He leads his team in assists by a margin of 10, with 26.

It’s good news all around for the defensive prospects this week. Eric Jamieson also had a solid week in the WHL, and the prospects in the AHL are starting to find the scoresheet more consistently.

It was a great week, production-wise. Let’s take a look!

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Calgary Wranglers had a great week, going 2–0–0 against the Tucson Roadrunners and scoring 10 goals in the process.
  • Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr were called up to the Flames last week. As they account for two of the Wranglers’ top five scorers, this transaction created opportunities for others to step in and lead the offence.
  • William Stromgren was one of those who stepped up in a big way. After a three-point week last week, he picked up another three this week with two goals and a helper. He now has five goals and 18 points on the season and sits fifth in team scoring. Here’s a look at one of his goals:
  • Highly touted defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz picked up his fifth point of the season: another assist. He has yet to score a goal in the AHL, but it’s sure to come!
  • Jeremie Poirier and Ilya Solovyov each picked up two points this week. They’re up to 10 and 13 now, respectively. Check out this snipe from Poirier:
  • Joni Jurmo—acquired in the Elias Lindholm trade with Brzustewicz—failed to register a point this week. However, after an impressive nine-game stint in the ECHL, he’s finally seeing the ice in the AHL. Across two games, he registered one shot on goal and an even plus-minus.
  • Goaltender Waltteri Ignatjew picked up a win in his only game, stopping 28 of 31 shots. He improved to a 3.83 goals against average and a .877 save percentage.

Europe

  • Nikita Okhotyuk earned his fifth point over in the KHL for CSKA Moskva. As usual, he was relied on heavily in shorthanded situations. Across three games, Okhotyuk dished five hits and blocked six shots.
  • No games this week for any of Daniil Chechelev, Yegor Yegorov, or Kirill Zarubin.

NCAA

  • It was a quiet week for Flames prospects in college hockey.
  • Cade Littler and Aydar Suniev each had a point, improving their totals to four and 17, respectively.
  • Trevor Hoskin went scoreless in his game, while netminder Arseni Sergeyev didn’t suit up this week.

OHL

  • Luke Misa’s sensational play of late was on full display once again. He lit the lamp four times in three games and added a couple of helpers for six points on the week. With 17 goals and 38 points in 27 games, he’s quickly becoming one of the Flames’ most productive and exciting prospects.
  • Another player who’s been racking up points lately is Henry Mews. With five assists this week, he’s up to 34 points in 27 games. Mews sits fourth in the OHL in scoring by a defenceman. He was this close to scoring a goal Friday night:
  • Tied with Mews on the OHL’s leaderboard for defencemen is Saginaw Spirit sensation Zayne Parekh. He scored twice this week and added two helpers. He can really shoot the puck:

QMJHL

  • Shawinigan Cataractes winger Matvei Gridin scored three times and added an assist for four points in three games. He now has 15 goals and 32 points in 27 games and is second on his team in both goals and points. He’s making it look easy:
  • No points for Moncton Wildcats blue liner Etienne Morin this week. He still sits at a point per game, though, with 27 in 27.

WHL

  • The best news out of the WHL this week is Andrew Basha returning to action Saturday for the Medicine Hat Tigers. He missed 12 games due to injury.
  • Hunter Laing scored twice and added an assist for three points. He’s up to 18 points in 26 games for the Prince George Cougars. Check out the nice release on this goal:
  • Over to the Vancouver Giants, Jaden Lipinski also had two goals and three points as he looks to catch fire after a slow start. He now has 14 points in 18 games.

NHLe Leaderboard
