Calgary Flames sign defence prospect Joni Jurmo to a two-year entry-level contract

The Calgary Flames announced that they have signed prospect Joni Jurmo to a two-year entry-level contract. The deal will carry an average annual value (AAV) worth $850K and begin in the 2024–25 season. Jurmo’s rights were set to expire on June 1, 2024, so the Flames get a piece of business off the table.

Jurmo’s progression this year

Jurmo was one of five pieces acquired in the Elias Lindholm trade a few months ago. Jurmo, alongside Andrei Kuzmenko, Hunter Brzustewicz, a 2024 first-rounder, and a conditional 2024 fourth-rounder, are proving to be a heck of a return for Lindholm. The Flames signed Hunter Brzustewicz to his entry-level contract ten days ago. So, now all three player assets acquired in the deal have contracts with the team.

Jurmo is a 6’5″, 209 lbs left shot defenceman who has spent time with both Ilves Tampere and KooKoo Kouvola in the SM-Liiga. He had one assist in 28 games with Ilves, and four points in 18 games with KooKoo. Jurmo was selected 82nd overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2020 NHL Draft. A defensive defenceman with a big frame and smooth skating, Jurmo is another addition to the Calgary Flames defensive prospect pool that has been very thin in the past few seasons.

What’s next for Jurmo

Per Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg, Jurmo is set to join the Calgary Wranglers on an AHL try-out (ATO) for the remainder of the 2023–24 season.
