Calgary Flames

Where are they now: The 2021–22 Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames have had a tonne of turnover since the extremely fun and entertaining 2021–22 season, which saw the team win the Pacific Division and be eliminated in the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only seven players remain from that roster, so let’s take a look at where everyone else is now from that team.

Johnny Gaudreau

After a career year in Calgary, scoring 40 goals and 115 points, Johnny Gaudreau inked a seven-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, broke our hearts, and this is what began the teardown of this Flames team. He remains a member of the Blue Jackets today.

Elias Lindholm

Like many on that team, Elias Lindholm had a career season in 2021–22; he would go on to to play one more full season as a member of the Flames before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks this past January. He remains on the Canucks—for now—as he is a pending unrestricted free agent come July 1.

Matthew Tkachuk

The guy who many thought would be the next captain of the Calgary Flames, Matthew Tkachuk had his major breakout year in 2021–22, scoring 42 goals and 104 points. That summer, he told the Flames he was not going to sign long-term and was traded to the Florida Panthers.

He is currently still on the Panthers and has become one of the true superstars in the NHL while helping to lead them to the top spot in the leaguewide standings. Tkachuk was truly the one who got away.

Andrew Mangiapane

Tell me if you heard this before, but Andrew Mangiapane was another player who had a career season in 2021–22. Mangiapane potted 35 goals and had 55 points that season. He is still a member of the Flames and is still a key cog to the 88–11–20 line.

Mikael Backlund

Now officially the team’s captain, Mikael Backlund signed a contract extension with the Flames before this season began that will keep him the captain of the Flames for another two years after this.

Blake Coleman

Signed as a free agent in the summer of 2021, the Texas-born Blake Coleman is enjoying a career season thus far with the Flames, as he is now up to 26 goals on the campaign and has been arguably their best skater this season.

Dillon Dube

Dillon Dube is technically part of the Flames, but he is currently on leave after surrendering to the London Police in regards to the 2018 World Juniors investigation.

Calle Jarnkrok

One of the two big in-season additions to the Flames in 2022, Calle Jarnkrok would only score one goal as a member of the Flames. He signed a four-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2022 and is still a member of the Leafs today.

Tyler Toffoli

The other significant in-season addition to the Flames roster, Tyler Toffoli would play for the Flames for a year and a half, having his best season in 2022–23 before being traded to the New Jersey Devils just ahead of the 2023 NHL Draft. He remains a Devil for the time being, as he is an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Trade Deadline Update: Toffoli is now a Winnipeg Jet!

Milan Lucic

Milan Lucic played four seasons in Calgary before signing with the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2023. He is still a member of the Bruins, but has not played since October 21, 2023 due to an off-ice investigation.

Trevor Lewis

Trevor Lewis played two seasons in Calgary as the team’s fourth-line centre. He is currently a member of the Los Angeles Kings.

Brett Ritchie

Brett Ritchie also played for the Flames for about two and a half seasons before being dealt to the Arizona Coyotes at the 2023 trade deadline. Ritchie is spending this season playing for Minsk Dynamo in the KHL.

Adam Ruzicka

Adam Ruzicka got his first taste of real big minutes in the NHL in 2021–22. He would spend the next year and a half with the Flames before he was claimed off of waivers by the Arizona Coyotes. He had his contract terminated due to a video he posted of himself on social media and is currently not on an NHL team’s roster.

Sean Monahan

Sean Monahan dealt with a tonne of injuries over his last few years in Calgary. He was limited to just 65 games in 2021–22 before being shut down for season-ending surgery. He was traded that offseason to the Montreal Canadiens and is now playing for the Winnipeg Jets, where he is enjoying a very nice rebound season.

Rasmus Andersson

Rasmus Andersson was another player who enjoyed a career season in 2021–22. He is still a Flame to this day and currently wears an ‘A’ for the team.

Noah Hanifin

Noah Hanifin was yet another player who had his best season in 2021–22. Hanifin rejected multiple contract extension offers this season and was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights, where he will remain for now as he is an unrestricted free agent at the season’s end.

Oliver Kylington

The 2021–2022 season was Oliver Kylington‘s coming out party. After being jerked around by the franchise, Kylington finally cemented himself in a top-four role with the Flames, where he flourished.

He missed the entirety of the 2022–23 season and half of this season but is now back and playing with the Flames. He is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Chris Tanev

One of the best Flames free agent signings ever, Chris Tanev was a rock on the Flames blue line for the entirety of his contract and was a massive reason for Kylington’s aforementioned breakout campaign. Tanev was traded to the Dallas Stars in late February, and he will be there for the rest of the year; he will be an unrestricted free agent at year’s end.

Nikita Zadorov

Nikita Zadorov was a polarizing figure during his time in Calgary. He was brought over in a trade in the summer of 2021 and struggled out of the gates. He gained his footing later that season and was a big piece to the Flames’ back end.

Zadorov would play just over two seasons in Calgary before being dealt to the Canucks in late November. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Erik Gudbranson

What looked to be like an awful signing, Erik Gudbranson was a rock-solid piece for the Flames in 2021–22. He turned that season into a four-year, $4,000,000-a-year deal in Columbus, where he still currently plays.

Michael Stone

For what felt like a lifetime as a Flame, Michael Stone didn’t play much in 2021–22, but he was very reliable when called upon and played a big part of the blue line during the playoffs in 2022. Stone is now retired and works for the Flames in a player development role.

Jacob Markstrom

The big signing in the 2020 offseason, Jacob Markstrom was the runner-up in Vezina voting in 2022. He currently remains the starting goalie for the Flames.

Dan Vladar

Dan Vladar was a solid backup in his first season as a Flame, and has remained Markstrom’s backup since then.
