Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 56: Monahan scores hat trick in Saddledome return but Calgary comes out on top

The Calgary Flames ushered in the Winnipeg Jets for a Family Day matchup. Along with the Jets came Sean Monahan, who was traded to Winnipeg by the Montreal Canadiens earlier in February. Since the Canadiens haven’t made their way to the Saddledome yet this year, it would be Monahan’s first visit back this season.

The forward put on a show in the first period scoring three straight goals for a hat trick, but the Flames steadily clawed back to take down the Jets to snap their losing skid.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The two teams both posted over 30 shots, making for a high-event matinee matchup.
  • The Flames were out-finessed in the faceoff circle by a decent margin.

  • Monahan’s hat trick made up the first three goals he’s ever scored against the Flames. He went goalless in his previous games.
  • Nazem Kadri posted three points again for the second time in February. His last instance came on February 6 against the Bruins.

All situations Corsi

  • The Flames got up ahead early with Oliver Kylington’s goal, but Monahan’s hat trick in the span of just over five minutes, including two power play goals was a lot to go wrong for Calgary in short order.
  • However, they responded and chipped away all game long. They eventually outworked the Jets as the visitors ran out of fuel.
  • All three of Monahan’s goals came from in close a.k.a. Monahan’s vintage office view.
  • The Flames also converted on high-danger chances too. Goal plots like these offer a sense of how good Calgary could be if they’d play like this game over game.

5v5 Corsi

  • Not many minutes of the game were played at situations other than 5v5. With just five power plays in total and three power play goals between the two teams, the plot looks quite similar to the all situations chart. Calgary outplayed the Jets after Monahan’s hat trick and it earned them the win.
  • The Jets were not very coherent at 5v5 and they weren’t able to get too many high-danger opportunities—a testament to the Flames’ defence.
  • The Flames were more opportunistic and were able to control more of the 5v5 game flow.
