The Calgary Flames’ had one game remaining on their four-game road trip and it was against the lowly, injury-ridden, definitely not an NHL-level rostering Chicago Blackhawks. With a recent injury to rookie phenom Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks’ forward group had a combined caphit of $15.0M, as per CapFriendly.com.
Nevertheless, the Flames found a way to still lose and have gone winless in their past four games against Chicago.

- The Flames posted better stats in a couple of areas, but didn’t for goals, where that of course mattered the most.
- The Blackhawks scored four goals on just 20 shots, making for a weak performance from Daniel Vladar.

- Nazem Kadri picked up a two-goal game but neither he nor the rest of the team found the game-tying goal in the third period.
- Jonathan Huberdeau now has five points in his last five games with two primary assists in this one.

- The ice was titled in the Flames’ favour but they weren’t effective enough for a complete 60-minute effort.
- Once the Flames trailed by one goal in the second period, they were good at limiting the Blackhawks from generating offence, but it was too late for them as three straight goals from Chicago sealed the deal.
- A worrying trend for the Flames is their overall propensity to shoot from anywhere on the ice, and this was displayed against the Blackhawks as well. They did have high-danger shots but don’t have the same offensive efficiency as elite teams are consistently able to show.
- The Flames were pretty good on defence however, as they didn’t allow many good opportunities for the Blackhawks. That said, Calgary’s goaltending was the weak link in the game.
5v5 Corsi
- At 5v5, the Flames were seemingly better throughout the game. However it’s clear where the tides shifted as the two quick goals from Chicago woke the Flames up, but Petr Mrazek was up to the task in defending his net.
- The shot spread for both teams were pretty bad overall at 5v5. Again, the Flames did get more high-danger chances compared to the Blackhawks, but it wasn’t a particularly pretty effort.
