Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 30: Calgary falls short in Minnesota with a shootout loss to cap off road trip

To finish off their three-game Central Division road trip, the Calgary Flames faced off against the Minnesota Wild, a team they had just lost to a little over a week ago. The Flames looked to get back into the win column after going winless in their first two matchups of the short set away from the Saddledome.

Things didn’t start off well for the Flames as they looked flat, whereas the Wild were ready right at puck drop. The Flames were hemmed in their zone for extended portions right off the bat and it led to a goal against that came off of a terrible giveaway by Jonathan Huberdeau. He couldn’t protect the puck along the boards and it popped free for Matt Boldy to pick it up for the opening goal. The first period was simply not the Flames’ best as they were completely unable to generate any consistent offence while they gave up a lot more quality chances against them.

As the game progressed, the Flames looked better but it was largely in short bursts as momentum shifted back and forth. The Flames were able to tie things up in the second period thanks to a power play goal from Yegor Sharangovich, which marks his fourth consecutive game with a goal and makes him the first Flame to 10 goals on the season.

Early in the third, the Flames got their first lead of the game with a shorthanded goal from Blake Coleman, where his goal put him second on the team with nine goals to his name this year. Unfortunately, their lead lasted less than a minute as the Wild had an answer from Marco Rossi.

The game required a shootout to determine a winner, and while Sharangovich scored for the Flames and Daniel Vladar made a stellar scorpion save, the Wild were able to pick up the extra point to close out the battle.

Charts from the game are below.
