Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 29: Sharangovich scores twice in vain as Flames fall in overtime to Golden Knights

The Calgary Flames played their second game of a back-to-back against recent Stanley Cup winners, this time facing off against the reigning champions in the Vegas Golden Knights. After blowing a third period lead to the Colorado Avalanche, the Flames looked to turn their fortune around in Las Vegas. The Flames would be without Chris Tanev, who sustained an injury the prior game, and also sent Matthew Coronato back to the Calgary Wranglers while calling up Nick DeSimone.

Throughout the game, the Flames got three separate one-goal leads. Calgary entered the third period with a 3–2 lead that was tied up before Vegas got their first lead of the game late in the third period. In the final minute of the game, Yegor Sharangovich had a perfect tip in that looked like it might have been a high-stick, but the call on the ice stood and Sharangovich would get the game-tying goal. That goal also marked his second of the game, which also meant he currently leads the Flames in goals this season with nine.

In overtime, the Flames had the early offensive zone possession, but on Vegas’ first shot in the extra frame, Mark Stone beat Dustin Wolf to notch his fourth point of the night to hand Calgary the loss.

The Flames put together a decent offensive effort and had a decent number of shots coming in from high-danger areas as seen in the charts below, but they also gave up far too many chances against. Their defense is objectively worse without Tanev and against a team like Vegas, that’s a bad recipe for success. Vegas is a team that can attack and pressure in waves, and that’s how they were able to control the game without ever being out of it.

It’s a good test for Calgary to go up against a team like Vegas, but securing just the overtime point after blowing three one-goal leads feels just a touch disappointing.

Charts from the setback are below.
