Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 27: Sharangovich nets shorthanded goal against former team, Calgary falls short in comeback attempt

The Calgary Flames welcomed Tyler Toffoli and the New Jersey Devils to town for a Saturday afternoon game of hockey. A lot of things went wrong for the Flames and it led to a tough defeat.

The Flames opened the scoring on a great effort by Yegor Sharangovich on the penalty kill towards the end of the first period for what felt like the Flames’ first time scoring the opening goal in ages (the last time they did so was November 20 against the Seattle Kraken). However, things didn’t go right for Calgary in the second for multiple reasons. On a failed Flames defensive zone exit, the Devils capitalised on the fast turnaround and tied the game up.

The next Devils goal required a lengthy review based on a coach’s challenge from Calgary. The goal looked to come off of a goaltender interference, but it was ultimately determined that Blake Coleman and Rasmus Andersson made contact with Nico Hischier, leading to the incidental contact with Dustin Wolf.

On the offensive side for Calgary, a few posts were hit—including one from Matt Coronato, who was a game-day re-call—and Jonathan Huberdeau couldn’t score on a wide-open net.

The Flames tried to get back into the game but just couldn’t solve Vitek Vanecek. Wolf on the other hand showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game. Unfortunately, in passing the puck behind his net, the puck missed the intended target of Noah Hanifin and went right to the Devils for a quick game-winning goal.

So as mentioned, a lot of things went wrong for the Flames and they ended up falling short against the Devils. They completed their season-long six-game homestand with a 3–3–0 record.
