Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 10: Calgary’s sixth straight regulation loss spoils Zary’s NHL debut

In a high-octane matchup, the Calgary Flames managed to put together one of the better games of the year but managed to still end the game with a 4–3 defeat against the Dallas Stars at the Scotiabank Saddledome. This marks their sixth regulation loss in a row and they’re now 2–7–1 on the season.

This marks the Flames’ longest point drought since March 2018, when they went seven games without a point.

The game also marked the NHL debut of Connor Zary, who made an immediate impact by crashing the net to score the Flames’ opening goal. He was phenomenal in his debut, no doubt about it. Zary, Andrew Mangiapane, and MacKenzie Weegar scored for the Flames, but it wasn’t enough as the Stars’ 4–2 lead after two periods was too much to overcome in the third.

Flames netminder Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves but couldn’t secure the win, extending his personal losing streak to seven straight starts.

As mentioned, the Flames played a better game than previous games. Not only did they put 46 shots on net, but they were actually able to get decent-quality shots off. Two of their goals came from in close and they had a good amount in that area.

However, looking at the shot charts below, while Calgary did get some shots off from good locations, the Stars were much better still. Even though the Flames outshot the Stars, the Stars definitely out-chanced the Flames.

Charts from the sixth loss in a row are below.
