The first of two preseason Battle of Albertas saw the Calgary Flames hosting the Edmonton Oilers. Prior to the start of the game, the Flames paid tribute to Chris Snow.
For the game, the Flames had a more complete roster than the Oilers and were rightfully more dominant throughout the game. However, the game was more of a goaltending battle instead of a goal-scoring affair. The Flames opened the scoring midway through the second period, but other than that, both Dan Vladar and Jack Campbell were sound in the crease.
The Oilers tied it up late in the third while the Flames had some goals called back. First, on a goalie interference; second, by the merit of time running out. As such, the game went to overtime and the Oilers ended up scoring the extra goal to hand the Flames a meaningless loss by standing points, but a painful loss by spirit.
Charts from the game are below.
