2023–24 consolidated NHL fantasy hockey rankings

NHL preseason games have already begun, and the 2023–24 NHL season is right around the corner. This season is full of intrigue, and with so many new players and high-flying rookies, players projected to bounce back from disappointing campaigns, and players expected to fall back after massive years, it is sure to be an entertaining season.

In fantasy hockey, managers will have to make lots of tough decisions this year.

Every league is different, but the overall rankings of players generally stay fairly consistent across leagues and formats of fantasy hockey. Since hits have been adopted as a standard category in most leagues, category coverage has become king in fantasy hockey, and knowing which players can tick multiple boxes is key.

I’ve put together consolidated draft rankings that take the trimmed mean of various rankings put together by others. Essentially, outliers both at the top and bottom of the boards are removed and the average is taken. The samples included in this year’s rankings come from a variety of sources which include the NHL, Dom Luszczyszyn from TheAthletic, Yahoo!, ESPN, Matt Larkin from the DailyFaceoff, Nick Alberga and Michael Amato from Sportsnet, and Jason Chen from TheHockeyWriters.

The value of consolidated fantasy rankings

These rankings are handy because they help identify consensus players at each draft slot. Using a trimmed mean helps to remove the effects of any crazy outliers from the data set and ensure those bold predictions from one outlet don’t skew the overall feeling of where a particular player should go (for example: Sidney Crosby is ranked 12th on the NHL top 250 list, and 85th on Dom’s list).

A few interesting tidbits from the rankings we noticed when putting them together. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Connor McDavid is the number one player on every single board. Some described him as being in the “God tier”. Right after him is Leon Draisaitl, and then it’s a tossup between several players.

There are 11 players who received at least one ranking in the top five, and 19 players ranked in the top 10 on at least one board: 18 forwards and one goalie.

Cale Makar is the top defenceman once again, and Igor Shesterkin holds onto the top goalie spot.

In total, 386 players were ranked in the top 250 on at least one board, a huge jump from 330 last year.

Breakdown by team

• The Avalanche and Oilers are the only teams with multiple players in the top 10. The Lightning dropped out of this list.
• The Lightning and Avalanche have three players in the top 25, the most out of all teams.
• 16 teams have at least one player in the top 25.
• The Devils and Lightning each have six players in the top 100. Seven teams trail with five: the Oilers, Panthers, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Stars, Canucks, and Sabres.
• A total of 31 teams have at least one player in the top 100. The only team not on this list is the Ducks.
• In the top 250, the Hurricanes and Golden Knights have the most players ranked with 11, followed by the Panthers, Rangers, Stars, Devils, and Kings with 10.

For the ranking list below, the far left column gives you the rank on TWC’s consolidated board, while the trimmed mean column gives the mean value for added context for differences between close players. This year, I’ve also included projected total points based on a raw average of Rotowire, NHL, and Dom’s lists.
