Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 76: Flames secure a massive overtime win in first third period comeback of the season

Well that was fun.

After winning their previous two games, the Calgary Flames were looking to win three straight for the first time since early December. They achieved that in dramatic fashion against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night.

After going down 2-0 to the Canucks early in the second period, the Flames would get goals from Tyler Toffoli and Blake Coleman to claw their way back. On his second period goal, Toffoli would pass his career high in goals with 32 on the season.

That tie would be short lived as Vancouver would get one back after a Flames fourth line breakdown in their own zone. Luckily, the Flames traded for Troy Stecher at the Trade Deadline and he would net his second as a Flame to tie the game up yet again.

In classic 2022-23 Calgary Flames fashion, the team immediately broke down on their next shift to let the Canucks score just 12 seconds off the draw, leading to the Canucks’ third separate lead of the game.

Things would stay that way until late in the third period where Jonathan Huberdeau would redeem himself, after missing on a penalty shot earlier in the game, by scoring on the powerplay to send the Flames to overtime. Yet again.

This time though, history would not repeat itself as Toffoli would score his second of the night off a beautiful Mikael Backlund pass to earn Calgary the two points they desperately needed.

The Flames deserved to win, and for once they actually got the job done.

What a night.
