As the runway continues to disappear for the Calgary Flames for the 2022–23 season, every game is critical for their playoff hopes. After an embarrassing loss to the lowly Anaheim Ducks two nights ago, this was an absolute must-win game against the Ottawa Senators for a Flames team desperately trying to claw their way back into the playoff race.
From the opening puck drop, the Flames were the better team. If not for a very unnecessary Jacob Markstrom error, the Flames would have walked away with a shutout victory.
Instead, they settled for a dominant 5–1 win over the visiting Senators, of which fans in the building thoroughly enjoyed.
The Flames still sit five points out of the wild card race in the Western Conference (and six behind the Winnipeg Jets as the team with equal games played. They’re also four points out of the Connor Bedard lottery. It’s gut check time.
