Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 58: Flames avoid potential disaster, dominate Coyotes in the process

In what can only be described as a must win game, the Calgary Flames made their first visit to Mullet Arena to take on the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night. Out of a playoff position by four points, facing a shorthanded Coyotes team that was riding a nine-game point streak, the Flames simply needed to get two points an move on.

It wasn’t that easy.

After Milan Lucic opened the scoring just five minutes into the game, the Arizona Coyotes would score three straight goals in just eight shots on net. A typical Calgary Flames game. One goal would come off a Chris Tanev own-goal—in his 700th NHL game at that, which just goes to show that this team was cursed.

Fortunately, the Flames would benefit off of a power play goal from Elias Lindholm, followed quickly by a Tyler Toffoli tying goal. With the score being 3–3 heading into the third period, the Flames needed someone to step up.

The rookies answered.

Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr would both score, and adding in a late period goal from Mikael Backlund, resulted in the Flames taking the 6–3 victory.

The score, and the underlying numbers, show a complete Flames dominance, but it wasn’t always looking that way. Charts from the game are below:
