The Calgary Flames faced off against the Vancouver Canucks on New Year’s Eve in a division tilt with heavy playoff implications. The Flames are teetering between a seeded spot, the wildcards, and even being out of the playoffs entirely as the Western Conference remains hotly contested. The Canucks have been on the outside looking in but they’re still a part off the chase.
The game was tied through 20 minutes of play, but the second period went the Flames’ way. Three straight goals in the middle frame got the Flames all the goals they needed to win the game. Calgary’s last goal of 2022 was a Flames first as MacKenzie Weegar finally scored his first goal with the team, breaking a lengthy goalless drought. No better way to ring in the new year for the defensive stalwart.
The Canucks answered with two goals but couldn’t muster the third, so Weegar’s goal also stood as the game-winner. Happy new year!
