In the second time in as many games, a former beloved Calgary Flame returned. This time, it was Sean Monahan coming back as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. In an emotional night for Monahan, he picked up two assists as the Flames crowd cheered him on.
The game opened with an early goal on one of the biggest mental gaffes by Jacob Markstrom. With Monahan seemingly on a partial breakaway, Markstrom vacated his net to try to divert Monahan but the puck remained loose and Montreal scored just 13 seconds into the tilt.
The Flames peppered Jake Allen with shots—mostly attempting to just tie the game, let alone get a lead—but Allen was a brick wall. It wasn’t until late in the second period that the Flames finally got through. However, Montreal scored next and it’d be the game-winner. Calgary drops a frustrating one as they simply got out-goalied.
